He's not a right wing wacko and Garland was a fine choice for the court. I'm just shocked that they went this far and blew up the filibuster over this guy. What was the end game? You're pissed that Garland didn't get a hearing so you weren't going to let Trump put through anyone? That's foolish and it was a bad look.

The Dems were right to be pissed. The Republicans should have held hearings and voted "No". They didn't have the guts. The Dems are now playing the same game as the Republicans and now look bad just like the Republicans.

And through it all, it doesn't even matter which side is more to blame (Repubs at this point to me). They continue to erode the trust in our democracy. The dysfunction gets worse even when you thought it couldn't. Both sides realize that the real battle for long term dominance is for the philosophy of the Supreme Court. And now, the next generation of a right leaning Supreme Court will endure. The end doesn't justify the means.

If you truly care about this country, then you should be in favor of good government. We are all vested in this.

You know as well as anyone here that this game of playing the game. The Republicans could have just held up Garland by using the filibuster. Having the hearings etc would simple be a show. It is the payback game and nothing more. They were pissed about Reid/Pelosi and the reconciliation ACA BS as well as Reid partially nuking things.

Is it right or what is best? Of course not. But people trying to say this back and forth tit for tat started with Garland need to look back a little further.

But if you believe in the Constitution as deeply as I do, there are certain things I have to be honest and consistent about. Obama was President. He had the duty to nominate someone to the Supreme Court. The approval requires the advice and consent of the Senate. Now one could argue he didn't seek their advice. But the consent should be given if the nominee is qualified after a proper vetting. If you want our government to function as intended, then the Senate needed to do its job. Democracy does not work if the requisite branches do not fulfill their Constitutional obligations. It is the primary function of government.

ACA was passed in a backhanded manner. The Dems have been paying the price for that mistake in Congressional elections since it was passed. They have been slaughtered at the state level too. Lesson learned by the Republicans? I think not.

I always got the feeling the DNC was so sure of Clinton's election, they rolled over a bit on getting a hearing/vote for Garland with the idea that Clinton would come in and nominate an ultra liberal judge.

I see both Garland and Gorsuch as being qualified and worthy candidates, but I don't think Clinton nominates Garland if elected.

It was speculated that Obama purposely selected a decidedly middle of the road guy to try to get him through the Senate. It was widely believed that HRC would elect a more Liberal judge. Remember most figured the Dems would control the Senate.

He was a great non controversial choice but there is zero chance that Clinton would have picked up Obama's choice. They hated each other and she wouldn't have wanted to be seen as not making the choice herself.
