You're acting as though we don't feel the same way when the tables are turned. I do. I wouldn't go out to dinner with another woman unless there was an absolutely logical explanation (i.e. work trip with no other option). I would feel like I was disrespecting my wife if I was out gallivanting with another woman while she is at home putting my daughter to sleep and taking care of things.

Completely agree. There is trust and then there is being a complete fucking idiot. You don't have to be a complete fucking idiot to prove that you trust someone.

Oh, I totally agree on both accounts. Don't get me wrong: a big part of all of this is simple mutual respect and common courtesy. That's even before the question of "is this appropriate or not?"

Hell, if I went out with a male friend and didn't at least give my wife the head's up it would be disrespectful.

Agreed.

This is an awful post in basically every way.

Who's calling it a date?

I'd say "It's Just Dinner" but that is 99% likely the name of several dating services. But seriously...two friends catching up...dinner or coffee is a usual scenario for that.

Either setting is also a common setting for dates.

It doesn't mean an innocuous friendly dinner is a date.

Who's calling it a date?

Leash is, because he realizes how silly it sounds without changing the original scenario.

I didn't even realize I put date, but now that you mention it... how is it different than a date?

I think we are entering "this is clearly a bit" territory.

Uh, I don't know....how about the whole "it is two friends getting together and not romantic in the least" part?

So to flip the question around for the single guys. Go around and start asking the attractive married woman you work or see regularly, and let us know if they see anything strange about it.

Would it make them strange if they said they weren't interested in dinner and drinks with you.

That's not flipping the question though. It's changing the conversation completely. Your scenario sounds an awful lot like asking someone out on a date. I think most of us in this thread are asking if there's ever a scenario where dinner with the opposite sex is ok. We aren't saying that every scenario where there is dinner with the opposite sex is ok.

Isn't the fact you are coworkers justify going out for a meal?

I have no rule against it, but thinking back I can come up with 3 times I've eaten or drank one on one with a woman and each time it had an awkward feeling.

Coworkers don't count in these scenarios. There may be a legit business reason for that.

It has to be a random male or an old friend or something.

Only for business though because she has to. No hanging out with male coworkers for fun.

Yeah, old friends are more likely to try to bring up some historical connection. Random males don't have that card to play.
