I loathe the automatic leap to racism, but I think it's pretty inarguable that some of the opinions on this are informed by the fact that this was a black kid who didn't know his place. How dare he walk on the presumably well-maintained lawn of an off-duty suburban police officer? He was probably trying to steal some low-end electronics or purple kool-aid.
