No, we're saying that you walk in after spending thousands on steaks over the years and get a free small cole slaw. A douchebag walks in with a badge for the first time and might get a standing rib roast for nothing.

Why fill it?

Why not give it to a homeless person?

The reasons are clear:

1. Those crooked soldiers probably expect it.
2. So that way, the soldiers will go out and fight/defend our country better on behalf of the pizza place next year.

To your point, I heard some firefighters on the Metra over the weekend tell the conductor that they're firemen, implying a discounted/free ride. He laughed and asked for the full fare.

This was Springfield, IL. I'd have to go about 5-6 miles off my route to find a homeless person.

Cops should only get free food on Veterans Day.

Ha. I shouldn't say "always" then. A couple times I would nibble on whatever they gave me. I think it was the owner who gave me the free container, so if she wasn't there, I wouldn't be offered one. Just yelped the place...looks like it's RIP.

Because he was never able to get the empty container back.

You are repeatedly making incorrect assumptions about me. I don't do that.

My go-to liquor store saves bottles for me, since I'm not short-sighted.

I can't speak for the proprietors of any other small businesses, but I know that at my restaurants all cops, firefighters, Navy S.E.A.L.S, and guys with gigantic heads eat for free.

What kind of stuff is going on in your kitchens such that you know about customers with big heads?

True, but I'm not sure this is one of them.

Small business owners usually "take care of" a variety customers - usually when they think there is something "in it" for them as the owner.

Maybe it's comping a regular to ensure their continued patronage, maybe it's letting ladies in free in order to get the guy's $$ in the building - or maybe it's to cops in order to feel "protected". It's not as crazy as some people are trying to make it seem.

It is hard to believe that this must be explained to people...especially city dwellers who should know how things work.

Especially city dwellers that want to remind folks of how much we are missing in the suburbs.

Spend thousands of dollars. That was the key part of your whole statement
But you knew that of course.

You are comparing one specific store and every single cop every time they go to anyplace.

Gotcha.

And, it clearly isn't that "wink wink...under the table", because you and JORR know every single instance that it happens. They are terrible at keeping stuff quiet I guess.

Spanky, if you are spending thousands at a meat shop, I went into the wrong field of work. :(

No. What you wrote suggested you were a regular customer. I have no idea the exact amount you spend there and I think that was obvious to everyone but you, and frankly, beside the point.

I suggested nothing about how often or frequently I go to either place.

I suggested that one of them made a wink-wink, non-posted offer to me in an attempt to get me to go there more frequently. I'm not a cop. But there was something in that transaction that benefitted me and the shop owner.

so you own a coffee shop spanky
cop comes in ask for a coffee
he takes it and starts to walk away without paying
you cool with that

in all of your examples you're trying to equate cops/firemen with other discounts given by saying it's basically an incentive for the person (cop or otherwise) to return to the business. the implication being that regular joe returns to spend more cash and that mr. cop returns and instills a feeling of peace and tranquility in your business.

what if i'm a business owner and i don't give a shit if the cop returns ? that he or she should just do their fucking job without getting preferential treatment ?

Not sure how many times the point has to go "wooosh" over your head. The shop owner gave you a freebie so you'd come back. Cops/Firemen receive freebies because they're cops.
