It's a real thing that flights are still coming in from the hot zones.

And the CDC definition of "airborne" is different than what we think it is.

And the hospital system simply isn't close to being prepared to handle this if it grows.

-From the CDC’s website:
“A low risk exposure includes any of the following:
Household member or other casual contact with an EVD patient.
Providing patient care or casual contact without high-risk exposure with EVD patients in health care facilities in EVD outbreak affected countries.“
-“Casual contact is defined as a) being within approximately 3 feet or within the room or care area for a prolonged period of time while not wearing recommended personal protective equipment or having direct brief contact (e.g., shaking hands) with an EVD case while not wearing recommended personal protective equipment.”

So you don't need to vomit blood directly into someone's mouth to get Ebola. Sneezing? Coughing?

Food for thought.

Or not.

It wasn't supposed to be able to reach the U.S. and kill people, either, but here we are.

Well its not like it floated over the ocean on its own. It was brought to the US by a guy who was living in Liberia, at the epicenter of this outbreak. The two other people who have it now were taking care of him. Lets not go all Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding Jr just yet.

And now 132 people on a plane and potentially 2 entire airports have been exposed in pretty much the worst case scenario for a country where only 3 people have/had it.

Are you at least a fraction of a little bit concerned yet, Frank?

Not really. If its airborne, yes. If ~130 out of 280million get it it here, then its sad, but its nowhere near whats going on in Africa.

If 130 people in the US get it, I think we're kind of screwed.

I don't think so.

The flu kills millions of people every year throughout the world. Ebola has killed, what, 20,000 so far?

The Dow is tanking.

Obama's canceling trips, setting up emergency Ebola meetings, it's over. Send money.

There is no way I'd take care of one of these patients. I'd quit if I worked at the hospital.

What "hot zones" are there direct flights to the US from?

That's what would be the "casual contact" that was detailed in my post. It isn't just transmitted by "puking down someone's throat" as has been claimed on this board. Animal test subjects have transmitted it to other animals in separate cages, at least so I've read

Right, that was a good post

But I still believe you need to at least have some sort of contact with the person.

I should have just said "West Africa." Severe? Maybe, but why take a chance? Let it burn it itself out and let it be.

It just seems silly to have passenger screening and such after the plane has landed and 100+ people have potentially been exposed.

It's lethal so minimize the chances of it infecting people over here. And then what if it mutates? How long does that take? The virus already is a different strain than previous ones.

JUST SPITBALLING, DON.

Except that so far the only people to become infected in the U.S. were health care workers. They are presumably in more than what would be termed casual contact - particularly with regard to bodily fluids. Yes I would be concerned if passengers on the plane begin to show signs but for the moment that is not the case.

I dunno. I think theres a pretty good cause for at least some mild concern that this thing is here and not very well contained so far.

The greatest challenge to stopping the spread of Ebola in America is that people here are so accustomed to bleeding uncontrollably out of their an us after eating that one of Ebola's hallmark symptoms may go overlooked.

I don't know how you can sit there calmly thinking about Foo Fighter tickets when your house might burn down because there are wildfires burning in California ....

New York TimesSecond Health Worker Has Ebola; Flew 2 Days AgoNYT Now

The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the Dallas health care worker, who had cared for a Liberian patient and contracted the disease, should not have been allowed to travel on a commercial airline.

Just heard she had a low-grade fever while flying. Think if stopped in a restaurant : ever seen servers grab dirty glasses in between their fingers? That's direct contact with spit and maybe they need to make some extra cash so they work 6 days in a row.
Ever seen how many people go through the shit restaurants. And that's just one stop in the airport. How many bathroom breaks did she take?? I would say I am a little more than mildly worried, plus shit like this is absolutely a killer for my biz.

If that's all she had then my understanding is I don't think she's able to spread the disease at that point. Seems more a 'better safe than sorry' being reinterpreted as "omfg panic' to sell newspapers or whatever.
