Dolphin, I simply cannot follow nor appreciate your attempts at logic here.

There are instances of fighting words and other instances of language not being protected and a nearly unassailable position that certain words are the most intemperate and offensive but in an odd attempt at a point of order you seem to want to blindly ignore that.

The point is that dehumanizing words are of equal weight as their intended result is equal

No. To illustrate my point, there are words you'd never use in even the most heated argument with your wife or a parent

Correct. For example, I'd never call someone a lawyer unless I hated them to the core.

If I say you are less than human to me because you are black and you say I am less than human to you because I am polish that is analagous.

But a Black man is far less likely to suggest that your heritage makes you less of a human than if the slur was presented by a person of any European descent. At least in American history

It doesn't have to be across racial lines

All of you clearly think there is a heirarchy of slurs. I do not

Each has the exact same purpose

Presumably you don't actually HATE your wife or parent. When you actually HATE someone and want to hurt them, you choose the worst possible thing which could be any of the words mentioned above depending on the situation.

Good Dolphin is a...!!!

There. This thread is now settled. (I'm half Polish, by the way. I always have to say this when I use the slur.)

Nas will delete this post. But some will have seen it.

Not a hierarchy, but I do believe there is one that trumps others, because of the many reasons listed previously. But, I'm not calling you irrational, or saying you are wrong for disagreeing.

I know you to be an enlightened gentleman and willing advocate. Would you ever argue that position professionally and feel comfortable?

would you agree that every racial slur directed at an African American is essentially the same word

at a bare minimum you are naive. That's the least insulting way I can phrase it.

I'm not the most qualified to answer this but I think the answer is clearly no

But that's exactly the point. There is a hierarchy of slurs, despite Counselor Dolphin 's protestations

Then you don't really care about the historical argument as they are all based in the same history

I actually might agree with you on this one... but I don't think that all ethnic slurs are essentially the same. The history of black America is a vile and sickening account of hatred and dehumanizations. Slurs against them are justifiably viewed as worse (in America).

Read the thread

Ok. How about for those of us who don't want to read the whole thread. Keep it short and simple. What is the historical argument?

Every slur word against African Americans is based in and understood to be sprung from the same history of slavery and post slavery as the one you consider to top the list

If all words were equal then no one would ever have an emotional response to them. To say that all slurs are equal strips the meaning and historical context away from those words.

Personally I disagree, but I'm fairly thick skinned with most of the colored cracks. Except that one. And I don't think that this is outside the overwhelming majority of Black folks.

Not that it matters but dolphin is one of my favorite posters and I enjoy reading his thoughts on most topics. He's wrong but I'm not bothered by it at all and will continue to respond until I pass out. If JLN were posting I would have checked out a long time ago. #Don'tRespondToThePoster
