The implosion adds another layer of intrigue, as I don't think that was expected. Was there a time limit whereby the sub was only rated to be submerged for x number of hours and would eventually yield to the pressure? We knew about the limited supply of oxygen and the various consumer grade parts, but it sounds like the entire contraption was shit.

There was another issue with the vehicle.

Pretty much. Sega Genesis was a better option. On second thought, Sonic can't get wet.

The CEO is on record bragging about being "innovative" in their design, by which he meant skirting safety regulations because they "stifled innovation/creativity." That's business-speak for saying the safety stuff is too costly and I think I can do this for less. Just want to re-emphasize though that several trips have been successful. James Cameron - and in this space he's more than a celebrity, he's basically somewhat of an expert - says somewhat plausibly that he's spent more time on/around the Titanic than its captain did. He also suggested this company's risky behavior was well known in the community, and that is was basically unethical for them to invite passengers on board given the risks they were taking on the design/construction side.

In a sub or sub-like devise, yes. Compromises our military.

Who’s liberties would we be taking? 5 rich people that would want to do it every year or so? Big deal. They’ll find something else to do.

I know these deaths will now put a stop to this shit for now. But as the years pass there will be ass holes wanting to do this again. So just make a law and be done with this bullahit.

International waters bro.

Just leave it alone. Nothing needs regulation here. People make a decision understanding certain risks and it should remain that way.

Why just underwater? Don't surface ships of certain sizes also cause problems? Why just underwater ones?

Right. If they just did it without anybody trying to save them I’d be fine. But us and Canada didn’t say “international waters, bro. Let them die.”

Because it puts us in that position, you need to make a law. You can ban people from making or owning the sub. Ban such companies.

Who cares about Canada. It probably gave Trudeau an excuse to try on a new costume.

From our perspective, it’s not like those search vehicles were diverted. They ended up looking for dead Americans which seems like a big part of why the coast guard exists.

If the US didn’t want to search for them they wouldn’t. They need the practice for recovering all the shit that’s going to get sunk when China tries to invade Taiwan.

You know better then that. They have to search for them. The outcry by Americans would be like nothing else if they didn’t. It’s not a choice. So just eliminate the potential problem. Like I said, only 26 people want to look at the titanic. And they really wouldn’t care if they couldn’t do it.

It’s not like ships where many Americans do that for recreation. And we need ships for commerce too. So don’t make that comparison darkside.

I’ve read from a couple places this week that no expeditions have cause more physical damage to the titanic than those piloted by “expert” James Cameron filming his movies.

Ships are common. Used for commerce and yes, recreation.

What further "damage" to the Titanic can be caused? Seems like the iceberg did the job quite well. It's not like this is some UNESCO protected cultural heritage site or something. It's 500 miles underwater and being consumed by metal destroying bacteria.

Dad was an engineer with a company that builds vacuum pumps and compressors, etc. Company picnics usually included guessing games involving company products. One year, they hooked up a small vacuum pump to a steel drum while the CEO was giving his "man, you guys are the greatest" speech at lunch time. Guesses were how long it would take to implode. When it did, I'm certain several people literally shit themselves- so loud and ferocious, and jumped all over.

It is a UNESCO site. I’m not opposed to researchers visiting the site either by ROV or manned submersible. I’m opposed to any rich bozo going down there wrenching off parts and looting debris.

Is the joke that it is indeed a UNESCO protected site?

Joke's on me. I had no idea. I don't know how that designation makes sense. Anyway, to go there 33 times like Cameron did makes somewhat of an expert in my book.
