I've been reading up on the titanic for obvious reasons lately and am sort of amazed at the wreck being discovered some 70 years later in the 1980s. I guess people knew the general location but it's basically a remote ocean area. To pinpoint the exact location 70 years after the fact using 80s era technology is quite impressive.

Because they don't want anyone to know how far away they were when they heard it. This sonar is serious shit.

K but why did they tell them a couple days later?

I'm guessing they told people who mattered. The rest used it as a training exercise.

And others went to Blink-182 concerts

Doesn't sound like it's that amazing to find it. I'm shocked it took until 1985. Then again, maybe we didn't bother to look until the 1980s. Lord knows we didn't even have the technology or the desire in the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Probably were advanced enough to look in the 60s but maybe we just didn't care. I don't know.

I read that in about 20 to 30 years bacteria will completely finish off that ship and it will be gone. But to still be around after 110 years shows how well built it was. Was no match for an iceberg, but very well built in 1911.

I was just watching Cameron with Anderson Cooper on CNN.

He helped design his sub. He's literally an expert. So he took no short cuts. Met all standards and testing. He warned another group building a sub that theirs sucked and they would die. He literally told that to them. They didn't use it.

So there is a difference between Cameron and the owner of this company and sub. I don't get why millionaires would agree to take a sub with short cuts. They could have spent 500k to use one of Cameron's types. A more reputable one. What's another 250k to them?

I'll never understand it. I'm scared of heights. Flying is always a bitch for me. I'm always on edge. If we hit turbulence I'm in panic mode. I try to keep it to myself so not to bother the other passengers. But I'm a wreck in those moments.

I'd never do this if I had the chance. Even at no cost. Even if it was a Navy sub. Call me a pussy. But pussies probably live longer.

The owner made all 5 sign a waiver. Death was mentioned 3 times in that waiver. The waiver is given for a reason. To protect you from lawsuits and refunds.

So...does the owner give the families a refund on the 250k x 5?

I say he won't. If for no other reason he still will be sued and will have to pay for lawyers and potentially losing the verdict for the wrongful death suits.

Also, giving a refund would be used as admitting guilt by the families lawyers. That would hurt him at trial. So his lawyers will advise against that.

Just something that crossed my mind. The money is insignificant to the families. They don't need it. But they probably want somebody to blame and have what they think would be justice.

I do know that waivers don't always mean no liability in court.

OceanGate's lawyers need to double-down and send the families of the deceased bills for the cost of the lost sub divvy'd up equally among them.

I would imagine their lawyers will find a way to void those waivers. Did the waivers say the company tried to get the director of operations to sign a statement saying his calculations were wrong, and after he refused to sign, they fired him? Pretty sure that there is grounds for a massive lawsuit.

I assume the waiver was as airtight as the sub so they’ll still lose if they get sued. For all the talk of the rich people on board, Oceangate itself wasn’t loaded.

There was another issue with the vehicle.

Is 8t that it was homemade shit controlled with an n64 controller?

Well, we know now so now they have to explain the waste of money and days of lies.

Was it illegal for them to be that close with sonar? If so why? International thing? Not our water space? That type of thing?

If so, so what. What are our enemies gonna do?

Its a hydrophone network its passive it doesn't ping. We've had that capability since the 60s. In 1968 a Russian sub sank in the Pacific and we were able to triangulate its position using this hydrophone network. The Russians turned up and searched for a month and couldn't find anything and after they left we sent a sub to photograph the wreck then in 1974 we went back and raised it. It was almost a mile deeper than Titanic.

gen z might actually be ok

took me a long time to realize many scam artists actually do believe their own bs.

still dont see the excitement of "seeing" the titanic through a 12" window while on a 10 hour excursion crammed into a tube with 4 other dudes. especially when youll see a lot more through a tv screen.

This is a very interesting look at an OceanGate expedition that got scrubbed immediately prior to the doomed mission. It’s a first-hand vlog of the journey that actually shows them entering the sub and being bolted in and submerged, and the CEO showing off the video game controller to them. You also get a good idea how problematic this thing was, especially in retrospect. This dude was VERY lucky the weather was bad and he knows it.

Thats something. Thanks for sharing. It was making me anxious just watching them bolt them in, I cannot imagine what that would feel like in reality.

Crunching noises.

Tried to ascend.

Electrical went out at 5500ft.

Total black.

Sub couldn't balance itself, and tipped on its nose, with everyone packed in the end.

Still black. 48 seconds of free fall to 9000ft or so.

Sheer terror.

Pop.

What gets me is how this stuff happens all the time and nobody thinks why it's a bad idea to get in a situation like this with nothing but dudes with you. A plane I get... You got 48 seconds before impact at least there's a high probability there's some hot girl you can tittyfuck before you go.
