They call it fucking autopilot. Not "lane control" or "turn your car in a semi truck homing missile." What they're really doing is beta testing these death traps on the public. The reason there haven't been more fatalities from self driving cars is (1) they drive around the arid desert in perfect weather and (2) they are watched intently by a Google employee who probably gets fired if they so much as budge from 10 and 2. There's two layers of "driving" going on, and when the computer fucks up the human steps in and keeps the PR nightmare away.

When you put some moron technophile who reads too much Techcrunch behind the wheel and he pays zero attention to the road that second critical layer of "insurance" against the computer evaporates. Then you have a zombie car decapitate it's driver and then try and haul it'd mangled husk back onto the expressway searching for more prey.

this isn't an isolated incident. over in russia some company supposedly programmed 5 robots with some sort of AI and one of them only seemed concerned with escaping the lab/captivity. they went and completely wiped its memory and reloaded the software (that's also working 100% properly with the other 4 robots, mind you) and even after doing that it once again had a mind to escape, and the 2nd time around it played a longer game as it waited everyone out then once it was unattended it found some hole in the fence or casually-unlocked-exit and made a break for it. it got out in the street and caught in traffic b4 its battery died and c'est la vie.

however it IS worth noting that mashable also includes this:

But some Russian media is skeptical, claiming that this was just a clever marketing stunt to garner attention for the humanoid robot. After all, the Promobot company did post a video of the incident to its YouTube channel.

*shrug*

Somehow this is the fault of a woman driver.

The tech still needs improvement but it will and it already is pretty close.

Its just a national story when one of these finally crashes. Its not a story that many other accidents happened the same day.

Now is not a good time to watch a movie in your car if you are the driver. We will one day though and it will be glorious.

The tech doesn't need to be perfect to be better than the average driver. It may not yet compare to an alert and attentive human, what about a texting 16 year old.

the other aspect of this is having a miniscule number of self-driving cars navigating roads overwhelmingly populated by vehicles driven by drunk/high/medicated/stupid as fuck humans.

once all vehicles identify themselves to other vehicles in their space via a local-to-that-area network type communication, these sort of incidents disappear.
I'm also pretty positive that the car pool lanes will very quickly turn into self driving lanes who can then communicate to each other and potentially even have markers in the road that give off a signal.

I'm all for this for one simple reason - significantly increased efficiency. People are dumb as fuck, and terrible drivers in general. I've had enough of driving 5 under the speed limit(which is already comically slow to begin with) on a one lane road, or sitting behind someone waiting for a red light to turn green to make a right even though there is no "no right on red" sign, etc, to last me a lifetime.

Yup. The efficiencies could be amazing.

So the Tesla periodically beeps and makes the driver move the steering wheel to prove they are still actively monitoring the car.
