there is no way in hell it is cheaper than the Jewels. No way. Probably cost you $500 minimum just to get set up.

There is effort and reward involved, but not financial gain, with the price of eggs as low as it is right now. Any kids involved will have lessons to be learned. The inconsistent egg production gets tiresome- a friend said his 9 chickens are laying 12 eggs a day right now. His wife sold three dozen ( the extras they and their dog did not consume) to the local "local food" restaurant for $3/doz. When the birds taper off production due to age and light units, you may only get 2-3 eggs per day from those same 9 birds, thus none to sell. But, as stated, you can then fill the freezer with chicken and buy more layers!!

I don't even have a fence. I'm just letting them roam the neighborhood like a squirrel.

Is it really worth the trouble to own your own chickens when you can get an 18-pack for like $1.99? How many eggs are you consuming?

You can't beat 59 cents a dozen for eggs at Aldi. Eggs are eggs. But some people just want to "live the organic chicken" dream. It's mostly in their heads. Chickens are a good amount of work. The chickens have to be replaced every so often because the egg production goes down. They have to be protected from raccoons, skunks, coyotes and dogs. The coops and hen boxes have to be cleaned every so often or it's just totally disgusting. Also they require lights for laying and heated water in the winter. When you break down what it costs and how much selling of the eggs it takes to make a profit it's not worth it. The eggs from Aldi taste just as good as farm fresh eggs.

It's more about convenience.

Until Amazon starts delivering eggs it is kind of a hassle.

Just buy eggs in bulk. They last a long time.

Hey, Beta...if you told your fiance that, how hard would she hit you with the frying pan?

This thread is about backyard chickens. Go start a frontyard chickens thread for that type of discussion.

Bring them to Kramerica Industries. Darren didn't get all that chicken wire for nothing.

My friend got chickens recently. It's stupid. Eggs are cheap and plentiful in Trump's America.

The fresh one tasted better but not good enough to invest in a damn chicken. My great grandfather didn't move from the farm to the city so that we could have chickens.

If your chicken is making too much noise, will you choke it?
