The better question is, why teach it? I mean, it literally doesn't work. Running for president is not for the most qualified, it is a popularity contest.
This is why attempting to blame election results on "fake news" is just silly. Most voters are criminally uninformed and come to the voting booth with all kinds of biases and it isn't simply because of "fake news". It's worked okay for 240 years.
The best evidence(locally), is the Roads bill/amendment that was just passed 80-20 in Illinois.
There's no doubt that voters didn't grasp the implications of that.
What's the downside of the bill?
It's a defacto tax increase as it specifically earmarks funds for the roads that could otherwise be prioritized based on areas of need. It's a sweetheart bill for road contractors to make sure they get theirs.
Too bad Gov. Thompson & Edgar didn't see their treatment of the lottery funds in the same vein and promote a similar bill 20-30 years ago when they started screwing with what was supposed to be "extra" money for public school funding.
Instead we're left with a current gov. & electorate that doesn't see anything wrong with the current officeholder spending $40MM to buy power & chiefly benefit his own personal pecuniary interest. And tacitly promote this basis for a new tax increase lost on the unwashed masses.
