It's a terrible idea, and part of the mystification of the military. Most of these guys aren't heroes, and training a bunch of kids to be killers to "protect our freedom" likely could have been better served by training them to do something else. There are many heroes who have done incredible service to society without ever picking up a gun.

The military does a lot more for people than just turn them into mindless freedom killers. Now if you want to argue that any public service like the peace corps would be a good idea for 18 year olds then I agree.

Not saying that everyone is a mindless killer, but you aren't given a rifle for the fun of it.

MANY in non combat roles only see a rifle when its the annual time to qualify with it. Think about electronic specialists on aircraft carriers, radar technicians, or even cooks in the Army.

In the Naval boot camp, recruits get around a total of 6 hours of live fire training. Clearly there's more if you get into the UDT or SEALS, but your average recruit holds an actual gun 1 time during boot camp.

Not every career field in the military requires a person to be in possession of a weapon whenever they are on duty. Special forces, MPs, and infantry carry weapons when performing their job tasks. Comm, services, medical personnel are just a few of the fields that rarely carry weapons. Those fields receive remedial weapons training and qualification courses once a year; the former fields usually go to weapons class at least twice a year, receiving rules of engagement refreshers. If a service member in a weapon-carrying is not cleared due to medical reasons, they have no access to weapons stored in the armory. This perception of the military being just a factory of killers is not true; military bases now are like civilian towns, with a police force and servicemen providing the same services you would find in the civilian world.

Free college is pretty sweet. My wife's younger brother is about to take advantage of that. He's considering DePaul.

Unless their unit is really fucked up, I'm pretty sure everyone qualifies more than once a year. I remember going to the range at least 2-3 times a year at Ft Polk.

All Marines are considered combat riflemen. Every Marine has to be combat proficient at shooting. It is part of the Marine mystic.

I'm good with the free college honestly, and the state has some great benefits like free hunting/fishing licenses and some nice license plates. The state also gives tax breaks on property taxes if you have service connected disabilities. I also get free medical from the VA for the rest of my life although it can be a pain to access.

A free fishing license for fighting in war? Wow, the benefits are never-ending.

This shit... I've known more than a few guys who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. They've told me some fucked up stories, but not like this. I only wonder how prevalent the type of shit was.

I was just taking a jab at the "I support our troops" bumper stickers which are nothing more than pro-conflict propoganda designed to take a shot at people who are against certain military action.

It's a meaningless and obvious statement. No true Americans are rooting AGAINST American troops.

It's nationalism disguised at patriotism. Those are the same idiots who complain that Obama's flag lapel pin isn't big enough, or there aren't enough flags behind him when he speaks.

Why don't you love your country or the people that sacrificed their early twenties to give us the freedom to venerate them for being paid to live at Fort Polk?

Also leash, it's propaganda.

I'd give it all back for PokerStars to be legal.

Also the license/property taxes/plates are for any veteran regardless of if they fought in a war.

If you fought in a war you get a sweet 100$ one time check from the comptroller. The heavy train never ends

I've never met you in real life so can I ask is this a bit or just a light jab at FFs terrible luck of getting assigned to a swamp filled with angry wild horses? That are protected and you can't do anything to.

We jumped into the drop zone at Polk once for JRTC. Terrible. One guys chute fell on two horses and needless to say he had a bad time. I ended up caught in a tree and felt like it was the best possible outcome.
