But, what is the average air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

i agree. when the birds start chirping, thats pretty much it for extreme cold.

pretty scary to hear the birds in the morning during the first week of february though.

and they were so loud this morning i heard them while driving to work...

Nobody has given me a good answer. Fine, the robin has to go south when it's forced to do so. But once it hits 0 degrees for an extended period of time, isn't it too late? Tough to fly down south in that weather. That's a long way. And it's also cold in down state Illinois. That's a hell of a long way to be in the cold.

I'm just amazed by it. Humans die in cold weather. But a 3 ounce bird survives it? I don't get it. Good for them. It's an amazing thing to me.

If I had to guess, I'd day it doesn't take them long to get a few hours South. Remember, they can fly straight. Online, it says the presence of bird feeders has made more stay as well.

Fine. A few hours. But in that flight it's still cold in down state illinois. So, my point is, once they figure out that they have to get out of dodge, how do they survive that long flight in 0 degree weather.

I'll never get a good answer. I'm just saying, the robin is an amazing animal. Humans die if they're out in the cold for a long time. But this 5 ounce bird doesn't.

Most Robins fly south for the winter, the ones that don't are ballsy and usually die..tough to gamble on a mild winter and depend on seed, berries and bird feeders.

They aren't migrating to Carbondale, they are going to Tennessee or further south and eating good all year.

The sparrow, Crow and bluejay don't flee the winter, the chickadee is probably half the size of a robin n sticks it out.

I like the ballsy robin thing 312 has going. Never ever thought of a bird as ballsy unless said bird happens to fly into my windshield

There was at most 1/4" of snow on the ground in Orland this morning. There will be some lake effect snow today, but I do not think the south burbs is going to get the 4-6" that was predicted. Whatever does fall should be all melted by Thurs & Fri anyway.

Seems like 3 or 4 inches here at the estates.
There's also some snow on the ground.
