South Korea exports less machines to the US than China (by far the #1 exporter to the US) and Mexico.

A year after he took office with a promise to protect American jobs, President Trump on Monday imposed punitive tariffs on South Korean washing machines and Chinese-made solar panels.

Looks like those South Korean manufacturers will now just produce them in the US instead of abroad. What’s the problem?

Do you really think that's going to happen?

Protectionism doesn't work. What will instead happen is they will protest to the WTO and impose retaliatory sanctions against us. This is what we call a trade war. In the end all parties are harmed and no one wins. This is why tariffs are bad and free trade is good

Pretty smart. If other countries are allowed to d protectionists so would the USA. This will help build a domestic solar industry that can stand on its own two feet. If Germany can do it so should the USA, but that won't happen with cheap Chinese imports undercutting American businesses.

Of course none of this matters because the solar company will be shut down in the future for failing to meet mandated women of color quotas and featuring gendered language in the company newsletter. But bless Trump for giving it a good effort.

What’s your point?

Uh.... #MAGA... buy American panels

I’m assuming you understand why this is not really beneficial to the vast majority of the employees noted previously.

While you and I might argue about why unemployment figures are down and I don't think either of us can definitively state the cause or to what degree Trump is responsible, we can both agree that protectionism is obviously not going to help the American worker. Trump and his cronies seem absolutely clueless when it comes to trade.

There are certainly issues with China, e.g. currency manipulation, wanton disregard for IP rights, etc., but slapping tariffs on washers and solar panels isn't going to fix them.

The key to winning N Korea is turning both China and S Korea against us at the same time. Or something.

Probably not. At any rate the solar panel industry is split on the matter from what I read this morning. Who cares?

One was supposed to accelerate the use of a new technologies that would create jobs and make America one of the world leaders of these new technologies. It was supposed to create thousands of jobs that wouldn't kill you before 50 or dramatically increase healthcare cost. It was extremely flawed and we didn't embrace it. I'm not sure what this accomplishes. Maybe it's just meant to be used as a talking point in future elections.

Aggressively false. The reason we import washing machines from ROK is because they relentlessly protected those companies from being crushed by foreign competition. Hyundai began making construction equipment and ships and Samsung traded seafood and shit...so it took a bit to grow them into what they are today.

We can discuss the nature of the relationship these massive companies share with the ROK government and how it has maybe not given as much benefit to your average Korean worker as it should...but it's still be a huge net positive for the country.

There are many examples of failed tariff policy that support what I said.

and makes solar unaffordable to anyone. Now everyone loses. US panels are still too expensive to be a viable option for anyone to utilize with any hope of a return on the investment.

Don't you see why we need free trade? It's the only reason inflation in the US has remained about 2% on average over the last 20 years despite expansionary monetary policy which in any other environment would've triggered excessive inflation (remember quantitative easing and a federal funds rate of 0%) The only reason those didn't cause increases in inflation was our ability to cheaply import foreign made goods.

Once again, The US economy is strong at the moment with low unemployment. Companies are simply unable to fill vacant spots in many positions. We simply do not have the labor capacity to increase our production of goods, which already accounts for over 15% of global GDP.

The reason we import many goods and is simply that we consume far more than we could ever produce.

Protectionism takes a long time to start paying off and democracies aren't conducive to long-term planning. They also aren't conducive to five-year plans and genocide, so I don't want to come off as anti-democracy. It's just a truth.

I dont fault people who still believe in the USA for trying, but these tariffs will be rolled back the instant Trump is out of office. Even if they aren't the United States as we know will have ceased to exist for some time before protectionism would have enough time to.be beneficial.
