As an aside I am doing a premature college tour. I was incredibly impressed with the university of Richmond. I thought this was as an add on visit on the recommendation of a family friend in the business and walked out of there very comfortable with the prospect of sending my baby there in the future should he choose. The price is stiff but my friend told me she had seen that they were aggressively courting the Chicago area with financial incentives.
Richmond is a good school, but I wouldn't recommend it if your kid is planning on living in the Chicago area. The lack of a vibrant alumni network in the city will make it harder for your son to get a job--unless, of course, you're going to pull some strings for him.
If your kid is just looking for a small, liberal arts college experience, there are plenty of great options in the Midwest. There's nothing unique about UR, and Richmond itself is kind of a weird place, although the beer scene there is phenomenal.
I do think there are some unique things about UR. They guarantee at least one $4K stipend to cover any unpaid internship of your choosing in your time at the school. This coupled with its proximity to DC (unique point 2) allows for a foot in the door at an almost endless set of career paths. Program wise, I think their leadership institute is intriguing, especially when coupled with another major. Financially, I think they will be desirous of having interest from Chicago and a school they know produces a yearly bounty of students who fit their demographic to the point that the cost will be attractive.
All that being said, we took tours at UVa, W and M, Georgetown and Richmond as well as walked through other DC on our own and Richmond was not near the top of his list. He really like William and Mary. Do you have any intel on it to pass along?
