The likely thing, in my opinion, is that they were lying/joking/exaggerating about their sexual conquests (as males that age are prone to do) and of course because he was accused of rape, had to try and cover it up because it would be used as evidence of him being sexually....whatever.

Lying about sexual conquests and labeling a certain girl a slut is not great behavior but its not rare either. The guy was accused of rape and they started looking into everythying he did and said in college. It makes sense he would downplay the stuff that while having nothing to do with rape could be used by people trying to paint him as a misogynist.
