Just add some bleach to the water, you will be fine.

I also did not know about this. First time I'm cognizant of it.

Never heard of a boil order before. Google tells me this:

A boil-water advisory, boil-water notice, boil-water warning, boil-water order, or boil order is a public-health advisory or directive issued by governmental or other health authorities to consumers when a community's drinking water is or could be contaminated by pathogens.

I don't have bottled water and don't feel like getting any. I will embrace the risk and refuse an ICU bed should I need one as the result of this poor decision.

You can't allow big government to tell you what to do in your house and what to put in your body. Water from a water heater isn't good for you and that's essentially what the government is telling you to drink. #Science

I was aware of it, but I've never had to boil water. That's probably not necessary when you are getting water from lead pipes.

If RR and Spaulding both tell me to do the same thing it seemed worth considering.

Reader knows a lot about water as a Saints fan. I'm shocked Spaulding would listen to anything the government told her to do today. This must have happened about 15 years ago.

I apologize Zack. I was just viewing it through the lens of the Frank/Nas/RR meatball arguments lately and forgetting we have folks on here with loved ones down there. My bad.

The water in Northern Illinois is completely toxic.

Some areas in Cook county especially.

This is not a secret.

Good luck.

No it’s a slow death based on genetics mainly.

How much lead can your blood stream handle?

Boil orders are kinda funny, because as you boil the water, some or all of the pure water leaves as steam, thus concentrating the contaminants left in the water. Unless you were to boil the water and capture/cool the steam back into water, which would then be distilled water, and pretty pure.

The good thing boiling the water does is kill some of the contaminants (bacteria, for example) that may be in there. Most often, the bacteria comes from ground water intrusion into a public water supply, or could be from a contaminated surface water source like a river (Flint) or lake (Chicago). That was the basis for reversing the flow of the Chicago River, which originally flowed into Lake Michigan, carrying a lot of unprocessed sewage with it back in the old days. I suppose Frank is actually correct, that you could chemically treat the water rather than boil it, but I think we can all agree FF is already chemically altered just about enough.

I had a similar experience to Squirrel's Dad, much less extreme circumstances, fortunately. A couple buddies and I were hiking along a river in Alaska, and got lost. We had no provisions for camping with us, and had been warned not to drink the river water, as it was contaminated by beaver feces. People were often afflicted with "Beaver Fever", and food-poisoning-like symptoms ( not anywhere related to the Beaver Fever most of us experienced around 13 years old...). I had not yet learned how to condense moisture from the air during the night like Mike Ehrmantraut.

Good question.

I’m not in Cook County though. Does the Naperville tap water or the smoking cause my slow death first? I’m guessing the latter is still a heavy favorite. Maybe they balance eachother out tho and I’ll live as old as JORR and Dr Ken have

Yeah, it was more about the Superdome and good natured ribbing of a Saints fan and not about anyone suffering because of the almost yearly Louisiana hurricanes. Krazy Ivan is somewhere yelling at me.

I'm just sensitive...obviously. Deep down i know you don't mean to be dismissive and cold-hearted.

You'd think with all the tech we have this would be a no-brainer. But some people just gotta make it hard on fam.

I contracted beaver fever (giardia) on August of 1991 in Alaska. I left for that trip a 5 11 16 year old at 155 pounds and by the time I recovered I was down to 120. Beefy I know. Took me 2.5 years to gain back the weight. Maybe another trip to south of Kake Alaska is in orde for my 2022 commitment to excellence.

I’m sure some of the weight loss was from being in the wilderness for 3-4 weeks and eating healthy (and a huge amount of food) while burning lots of calories kayaking. But I had pretty significant case of the shits for about a month when I got home. And a lot of stomach cramping as you could imagine. It hit the day we got back to town so at least I wasn’t in the woods. I was lean when I got on the ferry at Kake but by the time school started I was hollowed out and gaunt. Apparently it trashed your intestines so your nutrient uptake is not great for a while.

We were just going to meet my Cousin at his camp, and turned the wrong way, then wandered for about four hours the wrong direction. The two guys I was with were big tobacco chewers, and spitting a lot. They both got dehydrated, and we finally decided it was better to risk the future sickness than pass out from not drinking the river water. Neither got sick in the end, fortunately.

I was the smart one, not dipping, but smoking three packs a day. I didn't need to drink the potential swill, but survived until we made it back to our car and the warm dirty thirty awaiting us there!

Pot + lid + boiling = distilled water. Of course, if there were solids in the water after boiling (can't imagine there would be much), I'd use a ladle and take from the top of the pot.
