It still seems to be a thing out here but might be more likely to see a Canadian tuxedo worn than an actual rented tuxedo. We had a post prom at our school, poker night, and once you signed in you were there. It was okay. My memory is pretty vague though, it was a long, long time ago. Our's was always at one of the awful banquets halls in the Mecca area.

Lake Geneva has since outgrown it, but we used to have our prom at the Riviera Ballroom over the lake. Picturesque for sure, but we had to do the "Grand March" down the ballroom steps where they announced the girls and their escorts while the whole town came to watch. A week later, I walk down the driveway to get the mail and my neighbor, whose children were around 3 and 5 at the time, tells me that I looked good at prom and that I really outkicked my coverage with my date, who goes to their church. She was absolutely right, but she didn't have to tell me.

Wow. Sounds like that entrance took longer than the 40 minute commute to Lake Geneva

When I went in 1991 we were at the actual school sponsored events for an hour tops. I think parents are a lot more involved in it these days.

In 99 during prom, the entire point was to drink and get laid. It didn't always happen, but we always drink

Now you get on a school bus and play go karts like it's a 6th grade field trip.

Hey Tone! He said the point of prom was to get laid. I asked "did he suck your dick?" Heh.

Yeah, this shot has to be acknowledged. Nicely played, BRick

Our youngest is 2 years out of high school, but he went Senior year. It's still a thing here, as I see lots of pics on my FB feed.

What I find comical is 2 different places locally had "adult Prom" on Saturday. I am really really really glad my wife had no interest in that

The only time I notice prom these days is on FB Marketplace. Lots of moms or daughters try to sell worn once dresses for still a lot of money.

My first son had it canceled for Covid. Thanks a lot, JoeOrr.

We just went through our first. It's much more socially acceptable to go without a date. Most still do but it is a large minority who do not. My son was brooding about it for weeks, telling us we ruined his life by making him go to admitted students days at colleges. He finally got a date and his whole mood changed. I thought it was a really great time taking him and my dad to the tuxedo rental place. Just dudes being dudes, talking about fashion, as if we knew anything, and bullshitting with the old school italian tailor. Price was expensive, even for a more working class high school. Tux wasn't bad at $170. No busses or limos allowed and they were breathalyzed at the door, so no big pre game. We had he and about 5 other boys and there dates over beforehand for pictures and food. We invited the other parents. Picked up a tray from Tony's deli and some pastries from a bakery. Sent him off and then went to Mt. Carmel boxing night to watch future member of CPD bash each other's brains in. He had some post party in the neighborhood at some divorced dad's house who is the kind of guy who would join in with whatever the teens were doing. It didn't really matter because it was walking distance so the worst case scenario wouldn't be objectively too bad.

He had a great time so I was happy.

As for me, I hate proms. I had a suspension due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, so administration only allowed me to go a week before. I went with a girl who was a friend but hadn't been asked up to that moment. My friend picked me up and there was zero formality. My dad wasn't home from work and my mom just said goodbye. I picked my date up with the same level of parental involvement. Very different experience than now. I blame it on biological women. We went to the prom then someone rented a hotel room in what is now the W on LSD. My friend who didn't go got all the liquor and set up the room. It was fun enough. I drank too much. I think I was a fun date but not really memorable. I had a double header baseball game the next day so no lakehouse or anything like that.

When my oldest was getting ready for Prom, my wife (who had 2 older children) summed it up perfectly....
"Oh....the girls all now do their best to dress in the smallest articles of clothing basically trying to look as trashy as possible. It's wonderful....they all do it".

She was 100% corrrect.

It seems to go in cycles here. The last few years the dresses seemed to get way smaller and trashier. But this year for whatever reason it seemed most of our girls were wearing longer more traditional dresses.

I think it's largely forgotten that "prom" is short for "promenade."

My kid's HS had an actual "promenade" event for them and parents. All the kids were introduced like that in the auditorium and pics etc. Then off to the prom they went.
