How does Paterno still have a job?

This will be a problem for him and the university:

Quote:
The former grad assistant told the grand jury that he'd caught Sandusky subjecting a 10-year boy to anal intercourse and said he reported what he'd seen to Paterno during a meeting at Paterno's home the next day. Paterno then met with Curley and, according to the grand jury summary, told the AD that the assistant had seen Sandusky "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy."

The assistant later met with Curley and Schultz, saying he'd witnessed what he thought to be anal sex.

In his statement Sunday, Paterno said the assistant "was distraught … but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the grand jury report."

I'm not sure he will make it to a bowl, although he probably has enough juice to finish out the season and retire.

This is just so troubling for so many different reasons.

I may have the story mixed up a little, but I think that grad assistant is now the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach.

Just bad all around.

I have not read all the accounts, I could not make it past the first part of victim 1. Horrible, horrible stuff. That dude deserves everything he gets in this deal. But I gotta ask what the hell is the kids parents doing? Why are you letting your pre-teen son spend the night at an adult man's house so often? Doesn't that seem odd?

No idea how JoPa is still around. I guess since he wasn't charged with perjury and the other guys were I'll go with that. Paterno probably would say McQuery told him something different than what he told the investigators. The press releases seem to show they'll try to throw McQuery under the bus but I'm sure it's too late.

I think I can shed a little light on the reason why he and the president of the university still have jobs:
Penn State is a huge bureaucratic machine that moves slowly on any change or decision (I've heard it called glacial in its speed)...I could give tons of stories... but I think both will be gone before the start of the next school year.

To which someone should say "Well with the accusation in 99 and another accusation in 2004, wasnt that enough to think in terms of protecting more potential victims? How many incidents before you would go to police?"

Not letting JoePa off the hook, but don't all institutions have rules as to what to do in situations like these as far as reporting people to the administration? As long as he followed those rules, he technically did nothing legally wrong (unless he perjured himself). The administrations are the ones who are supposed to determine whether authorities are supposed to be called. I think its done more so that they can get everything in order to deal with the repercussions of a scandal. However, with this case, and I'm sure in many instances, this particular school decided against reporting the allegations to authorities to protect themselves.

Morally and ethically, that is another issue. Should JoePa have reported it to police? Yes. Should the assistant coach have reported it to police? Yes. Especially when the school refused to do so themselves.

Agree, they need to all go away! Now!

If the Big 10 had any decency they would step in right now!

I get what you are saying - PSU/Joe Pa should get the hammer on this - but it's not a Big Ten issue. It's way, way bigger than that.

PA police: if you're an adult with info, you have a moral obligation to come forward.

That would be for Joe Pa and McCreary?

and it's not one kid, but 8? and they have known about it for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone involved in the camp that just removed him from kid activities!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Legal time? Isnt there a law as an obligation help people? even if they are helpless 10 year old boys in showers!

I hope ESPN puts Craig James on so he can tell us this is almost as bad as what his kid went through at Texas Tech.

If you are the grad asst/coach that actually witnessed Sandusky having sex in the shower with a young boy, how do you not:

a). immediately pull your phone out and call the cops?
b). beat the living crap out of that old man with the nearest blunt object?

All he did was report it to Paterno? I know there countless other transgressions in this case, but c'mon, how does a person react that way?

This post is a fine example of why you were championship poster of the day last Friday. I agree with every word.

If I witnessed this sick, twisted event, I would probably be the one facing criminal charges, because I would fly into a rage and bludgeon the pedophile to a pulp.

Yeah, I can't imagine not calling the police immediately. I don't know what else I would do. I would feel I had to do something.

It gets even worse. There was janitor that witnessed a similar incident, I think it was in 2000, in the PSU showers and nothing was reported at that time either. Who are these people?

The more I read this, the more it pisses me off ...

Joe Paterno wrote:

"If true, the nature and amount of charges made are very shocking to me and all Penn Staters," Paterno said. "While I did what I was supposed to with the one charge brought to my attention, like anyone else involved I can't help but be deeply saddened these matters are alleged to have occurred."

He's deflecting "the one charge" which he knew details of with being shocked at the "nature and amount of charges".

He was told a boy was being raped in his locker room and felt it sufficient to report and move on. He obviously realized his superiors were covering it up and his inaction directly resulted in the further molestations. Now he's "shocked".

He's full of crap. He told his "superiors" what happened and what they needed to do about it. Now, it's just a matter of whether those "superiors" turn on him and throw him under the bus as well.

I suppose now it depends on their lawyers determining how that would play in court.

I think the janitor thing gives some insight into why he nor the GA reported it (edit: to the police). The janitor was a Korean War vet that said he saw his platoon mates get blown into pieces and other horrific scenes, yet he said what he witnessed at PSU was the most disturbing thing he ever saw. While we'd all like to think we all would go to the cops, and I'm sure some of us would, it's a terrible thing to witness that I'm not sure how people would react to it. I think the janitor and the GA are pretty far down on the list of people "responsible" for this.

I would guess most of it stems from personal feelings, shock, or fear. Some victims were being "helped" by him, don't know what they were saying when it happened. These cases are all kinds of fucked up. Look how many wives and families cover for it. Those poor kids.

I don't see how anybody, especially the witnesses, could live with it though. I don't think I'd have it together enough to call the cops. I'd be screaming, covering the kid, then pounding the guy. I don't see how you could not do that. Even if you were shocked over the next few days I'm screaming this story consequences be damned.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not blaming the janitor who witnessed it. Based on the account, the guy was obviously distraught and worried about his job. His supervisor, however, had an opportunity to call attention to this and didn't. I think there's some blame there. He also was aware enough to notice Sandusky kept driving back into the parking lot in the middle of the night. The alarms in his head should have been ringing off the hook. That's the responsibility of a manager and he has a higher standard - as does the GA, as does Joe Paterno.

I just read the Washington Post article with the Grand Jury report. I got as far as the 2nd victim and stopped. Obviously,Penn State and Joe Pa reacted much like the Catholic Church.
Report the atrocity to a higher up but keep it "in house". The shame of all this is besides ruining young lives,is the terrible reputation decent men who coach youth sports get from all of this. It's easy to paint with a broad stroke, but most coaches are just dad's & uncles & moms who just love sports and want to share it with their offsprings or nephews, etc.

I think the reason the DA charged the administrators is to get them to flip on Sandusky. They don't, in my estimation, have a clear shot case against these guys. Failure to act is a lot more difficult to get a jury to convict than the actual act.

No local elected official is looking to take out Joe Pa with this.
