Maybe Illinois is not considered a southern state either, but once you get south of I-80 it's pretty much rednecks everywhere and people in places like Carbondale and Bloomington have accents too.

What is or is not a southern state would be an interesting side thread. For example, Arizona, New Mexico, California and Florida are clearly in the south, but are not considered part of the south. Meanwhile Virginia is basically considered a southern state and it's in the north.

Was this a bit or was this guy profoundly touched in the head?

Well, there is a little truth in there. I believe Carbondale is farther south than the capital of the Confederacy.

There is more than a little truth in there.

Don’t need to go south of 80 for accent change either. I get marked as not from area because my so each patterns and accent are urban vs rural and I have a pretty flat accent minus a couple words.

In high school, I remember going to Roxana for the 4A playoffs. That was an eye-opener.

Looked at a farm south of Effingham in 05. That was about as southern as driving through Mississippi except no boiled peanuts at the gas stations.

A little, but he didn't seem to be talking about accents primarily. The rest is a dum-dum in action. Look at that.

Don't believe him, everyone. When I met the inebriated Rodent, I became confused because I thought someone was playing a Faulkner book on tape. (Totally kidding, though DS has a bit of a pleasant country twang.)

And Mrs. Squirrel roasted me on my accent. I can't remember what she said, but she imitated me (without malice) and it was kind of hilarious.

Speaking of mults, as a goodwill gesture in these trying times, all exiled mults should be reinstated

I’ll need to spend more time with the melrose park in-laws if I’m getting too country.

I was thinking there were some real solid old-timers in the early part of this thread, then I saw the map and was "Wow, that's Cool!"

Then I read that I posted nearly the same thing 8 years ago  .

Good to see a little HH in there, and a non-mini-ditka kind of mini-ditka thread.
