What type of people sit down and plan out the murder of a bunch of kids under the age of 10? You worry about a lot of things as a parent but your kids under 10 getting shot at school isn't one of them. This is beyond sickening. Just days before Christmas I couldn't imagine how the families feel. How could you or your kids ever feel safe again? Another tragedy where the use of guns (probably assault weapons) made it easier.

He apparently targeted his mom's classroom.

Maybe, but it probably would have been just as easy to make a bomb if he were so inclined.

Yep, just think of one of those parents coming home and seeing their kids presents sitting under the tree.

Fuck, don't think about that.

I've become so jaded, news rarely has an impact on me. I can't even properly function right now thinking about this story.

No way you really believe that. There is nothing that could happen that would make some of you believe that guns are a problem or that they make incidents like this easier. I'm just going to step away before I let me emotions get the best of me. UNBELIEVABLE!

That can't be real. Guns unequivocally making killing easier.

24 years old. His mom was a kindergarten teacher. He walked into her classroom, shot her and then gunned down the kids.

I'm not saying they don't make it easier (I don't really have an opinion on the matter). I am saying that if someone wanted to kill many people, a bomb would seem to be the easier choice. People always want to use the knife comparison, which is not really valid IMHO.

For Don Tiny,

Any truth to the rumor that these guys were the shooters?

Yeah, the Second Amendment (& the original intent of the beloved Framers) covers our absolute right to own one of those.

The guns now and forever folks have these poor people's blood on their hands, imo.

An anchor at the news desk interviewed a mom on the phone...and then the mom gives the phone to their child who was in the school during the shootings...WTF?

The 8 year old was asked:

"So...tell us what happened in there"

"Were you scared?"

"What happened when you heard the shots?"

What is wrong with people?

Here is my opinion. Nothing will change. Media outlets will make money off this. Politicians will use this for their own gain while at the same time acting like they truly care. You can out law guns, but people will still get them, you can install metal detectors and people will find ways around them. Virtually every school in America is susceptible to something like this happening. No law or security will keep something like this from happening if people truly want to pull it off. I'm all for outlawing assault rifles but I don't think it would of stopped this guy from doing this. He would of found one illegally. Just probably paid more money.

I agree. The arming of everyone is the key to ending violence.

It wouldn't prevent all future gun tragedies for the reasons you mentioned. Tougher gun laws would prevent some. If it's only one, it's worth it. Cuz the cost of tougher gun laws is really nothing.

This is probably a mental health issue more than a security issue. If someone wants to go into a moderately secure building armed with assault weapons, its going to be difficult to prevent. And we are not going to put bank or federal building level security in every school, church, restaurant, or library. The prevention needs to start before that guy leaves his house that day and acts on his compulsions.

Someone actually posted on facebook that [paraphrasing] that we need God in our schools and damn those who would be "afended". Yeah, because I'm 100% sure that this guy would've had 2nd thoughts if the kids were learning about the Maccabees.

Honestly, I shouldn't be so glib. But really, I don't see how religious indoctrination would make someone, who was clearly mentally unstable, not commit the crimes he did.

What everyone is missing, to no surprise, is that this is the perfect example of how mental illness is tossed to the back burner in our society. You can argue Gods & Guns all you want, but in the end if we continue to turn a blind eye to those who have serious mental health problems & the causes of those problem, we will have to just live w/ these matters.

Edit: Sam just beat me to this.
