No, it's not. He claimed to have met her in person multiple times. He was lying about this case well before he supposedly found out it is a hoax. That is why your scenario is virtually impossible.

What?

Yes, he lied about where he met her before and after he found out. The fact that it was before he found out supports what Im saying.

Here ill make a timeline for you

Te'o begins online relationship with whoever
people ask if he has a girlfriend
he answers yes and has a lie made up about meeting.

Then later he finds out its a hoax and begins to go along.

What about that seems impossible to you?

And I think its foolish to act like you know he was acting "the same" before and after. There is no possible way you or anyone who doesnt interact with him daily could know that.

And Someguy, still waiting for any sort of theory you may have on this.

"Theory?"

You might have a theory but SomeGuy only has the truth.

What do you think happened?

-He knows Roahnia.
-They started this stuff for giggles and pub and because they are young/stupid.
-Mantie is gay, Rhoania may also be gay, they may be gay together.
-Things got too big, too fast, they tried to milk Kakua's death for the Heisman
-Now they are all caught up in lies, deceit, half-truths and such.

This whole mess has been built on lie after lie after lie after misdirection/misinformation etc. I believe that they are both involved from the beginning.

I wouldn't be surprised if his camp has reached out to ESPN to run cover and that these voice mails are part of that obfuscation.

And in your opinion, that is more likely than him getting Catfished and then going along with the cover?

Now, Rick is using the fact that Te'o lied about the meeting to speak to his character. I would submit that telling that lie is not a big deal. I would compare it to a 19 year old kid telling his parents he met a girl at a football game when it was really a bar. (So mom and dad dont ask why he's in a bar)
He lied for a month AFTER he supposedly knew!

Once again, it was a friend who did this, who has absolutely nothing to gain from it, who has video on tmz of him hugging Teo, and a girlfriend he never even considered visiting even though he claimed he had met her before.

Once again, he had one or two pictures of her! He had never seen a video of her! He has severed ties with Notre Dame and all of this is being handled by a PR firm. He told reporters at the time of her death to back off and not try and talk to the family or go to the funeral or anything for "privacy".

If this was written as a fiction story people would think it was stupid. However, we are supposed to believe Teo was really a "victim" even though he's been lying for years about this both before he knew of it and after?

It's just as plausible as your scenario.

Too many lies, to many lies to cover up those lies.

If it's all a joke why are there 100's of hours of phone records of Manti calling her/him?

You continue to equate the "we met somewhere other than online" lie with the others.

That is a mistake.

Its not the same.

There were more lies. He lied about sending flowers. He lied about meeting in Hawaii. He lied about interaction with her family. He lied to reporters by saying that they shouldn't try and contact any of her family for the story.

It's a lot more than simply meeting online the first time.

Id say its more likely than what you are suggesting.

Also, what about the phone calls? You truly believe they were so into the hoax they had fake hour long conversations in a womans voice?

Really? Why? Logically if people are listening to phone records, you're already fucked right?

His play certainly suffered.

Also, in the one interview before the game I saw (I avoided all Te'o stuff like the plague BEFORE this came out) he was asked about the girl and gave a very general answer about "losing someone" which is a departure from the detailed accounts of his girlfriend he was giving before.

It goes to show that there is still stigma. I was even surprised the numbers of people who lied were still that high. See some are theorizing that he lied about the online thing because of the stigma.

I know you know that and are not dumb, so are you just being purposely obtuse?

But clearly, you underestimated the stigma some people still apply to online dating.

All of that could fall under the "dont want people knowing we met online" umbrella

We'll see.

What about the phone calls?

Well, the story seems to be that someone was having hour long conversations in a women's voice. I think it's just as likely it was a man's voice on there. What would the motive be for the hoaxer to spend thousands of hours pretending to be a woman? That seems really unlikely.

I mistyped. I meant to say what does that have to do with him covering up his lies?

I was pretty surprised those numbers you posted were as low as they were too. In this instance though, Te'o should have admitting he was lying right from the get go. He wouldn't necessarily have to come out of the closet right away, but lies beget lies and now he's in it way too deep. And he might be in it way too deep.

So you think Teo would lie about it because of the stigma of meeting someone online but you think it would be easy for an athlete at Notre Dame to be openly gay?

Apologist?

I do not even like Te'o. I didnt like him before this.

Yes, if he was trying to cover up, he'd have to stil pretend she existed. If he said "she doesnt exist" people may have gotten suspicious.

Not apologizing here though. Seriously dont like him, and dont like ND enough to defend any of their players personal decisions.

Here is a good point:

Jim Rome ‏@jimrome
Katie says Ronaiah sounds like a girl. Katie & Manti have same PR guy, so I don't care what Katie says here.

Yeah, I said it was easy

No. I think AFTER this whole story came out, if it really is a gay cover up, his best move would be to just come out now.

I believe he some would have sympathized with him thinking he needed to stay in the closet.

Its not the fact that someone would cover up being gay. That is believable. But to me the details dont support that.

Ronaiah probably recorded a lot of their phone calls, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those surface if Te'o refuses to acknowledge their relationship.

It is fairly obvious that Teo's people have already found a way to keep him silent. The question is how long can he be kept that way. You know, since he is such a jerk that he did this terrible hoax to Teo he's probably going to eventually detail all of it to the highest bidder.
