I very rarely spanked my two sons. Never will again. Maybe 3-4 spankings in my life, if that. Maybe the rare slap upside the back of the offending son's head if I had to break up a fight (always felt bad about it, but never really hard) Usually I'd try & talk my way out of having to spank them . The explaining my disappointment to them usually worked unexpected wonders. But, I've had to hem them up a bit whilst asking them if they "really" want me to get into the spanking/hitting business. The answer is always no. They understand the concept of old man strength.

Never understood the corporal punishment as deterrent thing, plus I don't know that there is any greater fear than actually hurting my own child.

The wife still occasionally gets mad at me for not spanking them though.

What I've seen is that 'hitting" often is more often about how the parent is feeling at that moment and not about what the child has done, which makes it hard to be consistent with punishment which makes the whole concept pretty much useless.

I don't have kids. Its nearly impossible for me to have an opinion on this.
However, I will be willing to say that I have seen plenty of kids that could use a serious ass kicking.

I have spanked and think that sometimes kids just need to have a swat on the behind to get your point across, I mean if I mouthed off to my folks or did something wrong and was flippant about it I got the belt and learned not to do it again. More often we go the route of taking a favorite thing away or a privilege. Sometimes loosing something makes her more sorry and helps her to straighten out or the silent treatment is also very effective. The spanking is only reserved for really bad stuff, and even with that we will talk with her and ask her why she did what she did as we want her know that we still love her and want her to chose her actions or words before she does something bad with repercussions.

Same thing with time out. For some it works, others it doesn't.

My father used to beat the absolute shit out of me all the time. I remember one time while I was in high school, I apparently pulled out of the driveway too fast on a snowy day so he got in his car and chased me up to the school(like 2 blocks away) waited for me to get out of the car and proceeded to punch me in the face as hard as he could and than take my keys away from me. Does that count for this thread?

Would you hit an employee or co-worker? Do you care about your kids more than your employee or co-worker?

Is there any other situation where you would teach someone a lesson by violence? If so, do you put your children in the same level as the person who is getting taught that lesson?

The option to hit kids is just a relic of a more uneducated time.

In the end its not really about trying to physically inflict pain but to make them comprehend punishment. There are most likely quite a few other ways to make them comprehend punishment within everyone's unique family dynamic. There might be a small window of time where a light smack on the ass could get the punishment message across but that negative stimulus will quickly dull and once you cross beyond that light smack on the ass I wouldn't want any part of it.
