We're quiet because we're trying to eavesdrop on other couples. It really sucks when they just sit there without saying anything. How the hell are we supposed to feel better about ourselves if we can't judge others based on the stupid dinner conversations they're not having?

If a couple wants to dine while enjoying some peace and quiet, I don't mind. It might seem odd.....but what gets me, is a couple that's dining together and both are on their phones texting. That is just rude. If you are going to be with someone on a dinner date, BE WITH THEM. Not just in name, but in spirit as well.
