I would wager Disability is abused WAY more than Link Cards.
I know several people on disability. Each goddamn one of them has no business being on it other than taking advantage of a fubar system.

Disability = SSI, not counted in the figure above.

Yeah, disability is out of control.

And then there are public employees who go on disability while working another job full-time.

But, still, small, small potatoes compared to the outright thievery of the banks in recent years and the military contractors.

I'm gonna tell my friend living a tenuous hand-to-mouth existence on SSI that she's cheating the system, the system which makes sure she can't even try to gain any employment lest she cease to be disabled.

Dude, no one is saying that everyone is a cheat.
I've referenced my friend Anthony here before. 40. Lives at home with his parents. Gets benefits because somehow he was diagnosed by a quack as bipolar. One of his friends, "disabled" (I have no idea why. He used to play basketball with us a couple times a week and had no problem moving then), sits around all day doing coke and getting disability. His girlfriend, has that can't grow hair disease, somehow this got her disability. It's like everyone is on disability.
My cousin... 29 got a full ride to school on the state, because some idiot classified him as bipolar (he's not, he's just a total asshole), failed out because he smokes too much reefer and starts shit, and he sits around playing video games and doing nothing all day. Gets a couple thou a month. For nothing.
I don't see any reason in the world why these folks cannot work. We have a guy here on the board who is on disability. Won't work. He obviously has no problem typing shit on a message board all day. If your fingers ain't disabled, learn a new trade for gods sake and work for your money.
I don't get it. Taking benefits when not an absolute emergency would make me sick.

Don't know your friend's situation, but she likely qualifies for a lot more than disability. She should sign on. I'd guess at least food stamps or EBT or Link Card or whatever (what's the difference among those?)

Disability has exploded in recent years, especially non-physical disability claims, e.g., anxiety/ADD/ADHD/etc.

I think giving folks 2 years of unemployment probably combined to acclimatize them to a life lived on government payments as well as made them less employable in the workplace and then disability becomes a/the viable option for folks who might never have dreamt of going on disability previously:

Heard an NPR story about people going on disability. There's a company who searches for people currently on or just off of unemployment. Or people who have been denied disability. They then do the paperwork and legwork needed to help this person get on disability and this is how the company makes their money. The government also loves this because when someone goes off of unemployment and on to disability, they no longer count against the unemployment numbers. They had a story about a plant that had closed. Some of the long time employees found a sympathetic doctor who had no problem declaring them eligible for disability. They also had job training for the employees. One of the 50 year olds was told by a counselor that chances are he would not be hired no matter how much schooling he completed. Messed up situation.

Just to be clear, I was quoting what I remember from some George Carlin quote regarding the "big club" that rich people are in. I was not referring to welfare as a "club." Just wanted to clarify...

Older, second career types coming from manufacturing plants where they did repetitive tasks all day are awesome for QA and even UX testing teams. They are happy to do the same task over and over and if you can design/build a user interface they can successfully navigate, you're golden. And they won't spend all day on FB, texting their friends, instagramming their lunch breaks and bugging you about when they get to do some "real work".

Would rather work with

Where I work the biggest abuse of all is people using FMLA to not come to work. Its similar to a person using LINK or being on welfare as nobody is supposed to know what reason the FMLA is for so its hard to judge. Thats between the company medical department , the person using it ( for which they had to be approved by the company and their own doctor) . Just seems an awfully big coincidence that the majority of its use comes when its time for that person to take their weekend shift every other week which is by far the busiest and most pain in the ass time to work for us. There are people who literally have used it for better than 3 years every scheduled weekend they are supposed to work. Company cant touch it cuz its federal and they have to jump through hoops to build a fraud case so they basically have to grit their teeth and accept it though it pisses management off to no end when so many people are off every weekend with it they have to run jobs shorthanded or flat out cancel some .

I know a guy who went back on workman's comp (not sure if thats the correct term but its 70% pay because you're hurt) for a knee problem. He was off for six months. Then he went back for three days and had to go back on the program (hurt his hand)

During both periods he was able to help two of our friends move. I mean like couches and up stairs and shit.

He rails on Link card users a lot, too

Stop picking on Chas. Those Germans and Irish in his old neighborhood are at fault, not him. He is a victim.

I'm on board with the disability thing being very troublesome for our society. As long as you're not missing a limb, deaf, blind, or a parapalegic, there should be some work out there for you. The whole disability system should be trying to place people who qualify into work that is suitable for their "condition". If the mentally challenged guy at Dominicks can bag my groceries, surely Chas can as well.

Surely a guy who has a 130 IQ, and is in good enough physical condition to challenge others to fights, could hold a job in some capacity. But, he would rather milk the system, and steal from taxpayers, while pointing his finger at others who are "takers". He is practically bragging about it here:
