I haven't been to Hawaii for over 20 years but on Oahu I would say definitely Pearl Harbor,
Waikiki Beach and I believe you can possibly ride bikes down Diamond Head. I am sure there
is some good golf and other things. If you like the water there is whale watching, snorkelling
and scuba as well as deep sea fishing.

Sounds like you may have made your mind up, but seriously consider Maui or Kauai too. It lacks some of the nightlife of other places, especially Kauai but there is still a ton to do and there are advantages to it being less crowded. If you want a true unique experience, check out the Hotel Hana in Maui though it is now called Travaasa Hotel Hana. It's incredibly nice but very remote. No air conditioning either, which wasn't as bad as it sounds.

I loved Hawaii. I really want to go back, but Scorehead actually does have a point. St. Thomas and other Caribbean islands can provide a cheaper but relatively comparable experience. Just like anything though, besides air fare, where you stay matters. There are cheaper places to stay in Hawaii, and really expensive Caribbean places. The best part of the Caribbean is many of the places take half as long to get to and you don't have a whole day adjusting to time differences.

I wouldn't mind going to St. Martin just to experience this:

The airport in St. Martin (Princess Juliana) is so close to a beach that it has become a tourist attraction.

Apparently you can go to San Francisco and get the same thing.

This. Leaving KOA mid afternoon just to sit at LAX waiting for the red eye sucks.

What Island are you going to?

surprisingly, there is lot of logic to what Scorehead said. You basically lose a day right off the bat just traveling to Hawaii. It is expensive to get there and expensive to stay there. It is amazingly beautiful in some places, but as trashy as the trashiest parts of Florida in any city.

I just got back from The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. If you want the island experience without the hassels, I highly recommend. The place is amazing from the moment you set foot on the property.

I went to St Martin and hated it. I'll never go back to the Caribbean.

If you are set on Oahu stay on the North Shore, Waikiki isnt what I thought Hawaii would be like. If it isnt too late go to Kauai and you probably wont ever want to leave.

I have a 10-hour flight in a couple months. My longest so far is only three hours. Not looking forward to that. I plan on downing a Winehouse cocktail pre-flight.

Just got back from there. Loved it. We got by pretty cheap since we have friends there and stayed with them.

My biggest recommendation on Oahu is go to Hanauma Bay and snorkel.

Scorehead is sorta right about the price. First time we looked at going to Hawaii we just went to Tahiti instead since it wasn't that much more expensive.
