Come on. At least respect the spirit of this. Pick a team that actually had a legitimate chance of winning.

You know, thinking about it, it might be worth changing the outcome of the Flutie Hail Mary game.

He's still a nobody off everybody's radar, never finds his way to the NFL, Ditka never invites him to dinner and then decides to start him, Bears win the Super Bowl.

That sadly, really isn't that far off.

In fairness, even Larry didn't want to go to Sycamore, wherever in the hell that is.

He DID just really go there to get off the garbage truck.

I'll avoid the obvious answer of the various Cub failures. I guess one that sticks out is the 1971 Stanley Cup Finals between the Montreal Canadiens and Bobby Hull's Blackhawks. The Hawks were better and should have won it. I still remember Richard skating around a flopped over Keith Magnusson.

Game 2 of the 1908 World Series. It's a whole different series if the Cubs are going to Detroit down 2-1.

For me, the obvious one would be the DePaul-St. Joseph's game. I was at my peak as a college hoops fan at that time and I lived and died with DePaul. I have absolutely no doubt that DePaul was easily the best team that year. If they played 100 times they would have beaten St. Joe's 99 and gone on to win the whole damn thing.

Now that I think about it some more though, I'd have to go with something that hit my own pocketbook a little harder.

In 2000, my filly ran second in the Breeder's Crown and if she had gotten loose earlier, she would have won for sure. She had beaten the filly that won on several occasions and had never lost to her before. The purse was $780,000. We got $195,000 for finishing second but the winner's share was $390,000.

Also, in the 1999 Metro Pace I had another heartbreaker. It was the only time a driver has ever apologized to me for a drive. We had the absolute best horse. We brought Dave Magee up to Toronto to drive him for us. This horse was very small and I guess Dave didn't think he really had a chance. He got him shuffled back to last on the rail and came charging furiously to finish fourth. You can see how fast he was moving at end.

This should be in the douchebag section where I could second the nomination.

Dave Magee cost me a lot of money on a warm, summer night back in the day at Hawthorne. Pulling back on the reins at the finish. Asshole.

Come on now, Seacrest. Dave was the best in the business for a lot of years. I'm not gonna tell you he never stiffed a horse, because I don't know, but he sure didn't do it by grabbing leather at the finish line. Sometimes you need to get a sonuvabitch to stay brave by grabbing hold of the bit when he's out of gas.

Then I'd pick the Patriots to defeat the Colts in the AFC Championship game.
I always thought the Bears lost the super bowl when the Colts came back.
They had a shot against the Patriots and yes, I know they defeated the bears pretty handily in the regular season that year, but they had a better chance than against the Colts.

Putting some thought into it... June 1st, 1987. I was 10 years old and pitching for the Elmwood Park little league. I had a no-hitter into the 5th inning when smoke from a fire at Polk Brothers in Melrose Park resulted in me letting up a few hits. If I would have finished up that no-hitter, I am sure it would have spring-boarded me into an MLB career.

Agreed, Hoffy.

I was playing in the Pony League All Star game. I had a single and a double in my 1st 2 AB's. I then dropped an easy fly ball which led to a couple of runs.

Fade to black.

Game 7 of the 1971 Stanley Cup finals between the Blackhawks and Canadiens. The Hawks led 2-0 into the 2nd period but wound up losing a heartbreaker on a long shot Esposito would normally stop easily. It ranks ahead of the 2003 NLCS because it was the finals and even if the Cubs had beaten the Marlins there is no guarantee they would have won the World Series.

January 11, 2004. 4th & 26! Stop that and Favre has another ring. Still more painful than any of the more recent chokes.

Or maybe he's referring to the loss to the Dolphins. How much more insufferable would Ditka et al be if they had been 19-0?

I'm with Dr. Ken on the Illini...that team could have been one for the ages. A 3-pointer at the buzzer vs Ohio State and the UNC game were all that separated them from perfection. Now they're pretty much a footnote.

Less insufferable than the '72 Dolphins.
