I sorta agree with this. I think it depends. Having spent plenty of time in Gary, the southside, and the Westside I don't really see it that way. Now I have taken country boys from KC on sales calls out to see customers on the southside at 8 am in the morning and literally seen them turn ghost white telling me never to take them there again. Yeah the media did it so did the ChiRaq shit from Kanye. Lots of BS and perception. Anytime I went into a Sharks I never got shit.

There are dozens of articles ya can read online about McCarthy coming down hard on his guys to make the numbers better..outright homicides being declassified as homicides n reclassified as "Death investigation" or outright disappeared .

Even if you truly believe that they are hiding murders (despite all the independent organizations keeping up with the same numbers) then you also have to believe that they were doing everything they could 20 years ago to keep the numbers below 1000. I'm guessing there was far more corruption then.

well, it's just that media coverage is truly ubiquitous these days as nothing sells an agenda (militarization of the police force, increase in the surveillance state, etc etc) like tales of "chiraq" to people safely tucked away in their suburban nests.

you know it's a bit crazy when you mention doing something in the city and your parents are like "why do you have to go to the city? be careful because you'll get robbed/shot/killed out there!" and it's like "uhhhh guys you know i actually have spent a lot of time in the city outside of going to ballgames or doctors appointments or some fixed static event and i can tell you that chicago isn't some lawless demilitarized zone with roaming gangs of stickup men and that oldschool chicago mentality of "what's a white person doing in our neighborhood? hey grab a brick and let's teach him a lesson about what neighborhoods he can and can't drive through"

but since that "close to home but not in my back yard!" sensationalism-of-violence gets eyeballs glued to tv news (in a post cheryl scott world) and gets readership #s for online/newspapers, well, what story are you going to run with?

you live in a city with what, 2.5 to 4 million people in the proper city limits? how many people in the metropolitan area? people are gonna get shot/robbed/etc. it's just gonna happen. but since the powers that be have drilled the point home that we're the worst city in the world and the most dangerous place and the violence is out of control, welp, they have their narrative and they're sticking to it. THE SCIENCE IS IN. THERE IS NO DEBATE HERE. CHIRAQ IS A WAR ZONE THAT REQUIRES A FUNDAMENTAL LOCKDOWN OF CIVIL LIBERTIES TO STOP THE SENSELESS VIOLENCE! STOP AND FRISK IMMEDIATELY!!!!

hey nas as i touched on in my previous post i heard that back in the 70s/early-mid 80s (pretty much until crack/heroin became more of a multicultural thing) that if you were white and driving through the westside you were liable to get a brick through your front windshield because by and large black ppl didn't want your white ass in their neighborhood.

it was only when the white ppl started showing up in the neighborhoods with a bunch of $$$ to "support the local economy on a grassroots level" that it was like (as told to me once by a local entrepreneur) "you think we hate you [white ppl] but let me tell you something.... us [derogatory term i will not use] come up with $6 and food stamps and an old CD player trying to get 1 or 2, y'all white kids show up and want like 26? man we love you white people come on down we'll serve you all night long!"

so was that "OG" mentality of "get the fuck out of our neighborhood/s!" up until the 80s drug boom indeed a true thing, or am i the victim of hearing sensationalized stories by middleaged men who just wanted to have something interesting to tell me?
