It's actually very pleasant. No noise, no obnoxious people in your group... you just glide through the mangroves. Canoes are pretty fucking huge, bigger than any gator. As long as you aren't an idiot actively pissing off the gators they dont give you a second thought.

I also believe, per Mythbusters, that bullets are basically useless in the water.

Gator skull is almost bulletproof, there's like a half dollar size soft spot..I'd rather take my chances with a gator than the cops shooting at the gator and me in the dark.

They lied because they can't handle the minute's worth of blowback that comes when they truthfully acknowledge that they viewed their own lives as more valuable than three goofy joyriding teens in a stolen pos car that ultimately took steps to end their own lives. If it was dark, and in murky water I cannot envision going in after three girls drowning after a car chase.

Not directly on point, but I was in a class years ago with the CPD lead hostage negotiator giving a lecture. Long story short, he mentioned (in a class more than 60% female) that the standing order was that if issues did in fact erupt, to shoot the women hostage takers first. The rationale was that the women were far, far more likely to aggressively/emotionally respond (overreact) and that the officers were in much more danger of the wildly emotional criminal women who where more prone to do anything to save themselves...or at least take someone with them.

Watching the largely upper-middle & upper income daughters respond to that one was priceless.

When we took the airboat ride at Myakka State Park in FL. there were fisherman wading in the water all over the place. The guide said that the gators don't mess with them during the day. However, he also said that only 2 things move in the water at night...gators and gator food.

This. Not going in isn't the issue. It's the lying about it. Just say what happened. You're cops, not Superman.

There was a guy who drove his car into a local pond by me a few months back (on purpose). It took professional diving teams a long time to even get the body out. Pretty sure three regular cops without gear wouldn't stand a chance to save people within a matter of minutes.
