When you have more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined... I think you can take a break for a decade or so.

Well Spaulding, "free" education is a monopoly. You get the public school based on your boundaries. They take your tax money regardless of the product output. The school board election is your only recourse.

Luckily our system allows for private education, and in some places charters, that provide an option. The private schools have to provide quality to earn your custom. Amazing how that simple fact makes them responsive to parental concerns.

Denis I think you have it wrong about Charters.

Haven't you figured it out yet? I am wrong with all my ideas. I mean the exisiting system of public education is so great that I am crazy to waste my money on private education.

Our country is so far down in the developed world league tables for test scores, and this happened well before charters were a thing. If the unions and school boards want to figure out a solution, I am all ears. I voted in favor every school tax increase ever put before me. I am willing to pay double in property taxes for better schools. Every union answer is we need more money. I am willing.

The system is broken on every level. Give me your solution.

It's not a money problem by us. It how they use it and what they are doing. I heard our district is going to spend about 700k on an upgrade to wide area network, bandwidth, and hardware. It's for the iPads which I think are kind of dumb. I know people in hinsdale were hit with a tech fee at the beginning of this year.

true fact but not sure this is a problem. OPRF is going to build a $45MM pool as soon as they can find 29 people to vote for it.!

think about that. a pool. $45 million dollars.

How does it cost $45MM to build a pool? I mean, they do need one, there should be more pools.

I think they are fairly compensated. But maybe it makes sense to pay significantly more to attract very talented people. But then I am told the teachers we already have are highly qualified and dedicated. The ones are I know are in fact just that. It is a commendable profession.

I don't know the answer. I am just looking out for my kids' best interest, and I'd like the same for all kids. There is no more important public investment than education. I know from my own experience. To come from a low income single parent family to achieiving the American dream with a public school education including three IL public universities.

I understand what charter schools are in theory but what are the problems with them? I don't think we have any out here or don't know if something like Avery coonley by us is one.

Well said Chus.

Educators know that our kids learn these traits from my wife.

By just about every measure they are performing worse than MANY of the worst public schools.

It's been a mixed bag. As Jorr notes they do have the impact of end arounding the unions. That's why left leaning folk are going to trash them blindly, and right leaning folks are going to cheerlead.

The results in NYC have been hailed. In many other places they are performing at or below comparable public schools. It comes down to the group running the schools.

Vouchers are better because they work off the exisiting infrastructure. But the rub is they still end around unions and by default public money goes to private (mainly religious) schools. Illinois has a tax credit for using private schools, which is nice.

Would you rather have your kids' teachers making nice salaries or have Bruce Rauner putting millions of your dollars in his pocket?

Couldn't of said it better, sister! My hubby says these politicians take all that money and keep it themselves anyway. And why would they want ipads in schools? Are these kids just watching movies while we pay for their drugs? This is why we home-school.

That's a pretty weak example to show the school is a mess. Technology is vital for schools. That is money well spent.

Most people in Catholic schools do not want a true voucher system. They would be up in arms if the less desirable kids/parents they are trying to avoid found a way into their schools with vouchers.

We once had a kid who moved into town and try to enroll in our school who was BD and had a personal aide at his previous school. The family was rich and was even willing to pay for the aide. Our principal past on the kid, so did the two other local Catholic schools. Kid ended up at the public school in our district. Now if there was a voucher system we would of had to take him, which would of pissed off the other 20 plus families in the class.
