As a point of fact you can take a WW2 era M-1 and convert it to full auto in almost any garage with about $1.5 in parts and 15 minutes time. There will soon be a glut of those in real good condition hitting the USA market as South Korea converts its stockpile to more modern arms.

Yet you still can't figure out how to take the ankle brace off?

Bob when did we amend the Bill of Rights back to the old "does not apply to non whites" clause?

Over the years crazy people have shown us that anything can be a weapon. Terrorists are adaptive. They make anything into an explosive. Hell, people were wanting pressure cookers banned after the Boston Marathon bombing. Terrorists are now just using vehicles to run people over and kill more than this automatic weapon did. There have been spree killings involving nothing more than melee weapons. The Tutis were slaughtered primarily with machetes at the hands of the Hutus.

So all this talk about banning an instrument is just silly. We live in a world with over 7 billion people. That's a lot of chances for craziness to happen. Unless we get to the point where this is the Minority Report and we can find out when people will commit crimes prior to them actually committing them, bad things are going to continue to happen. And no amount of banning will prevent it.

Never give up a pound of freedom for an ounce of security.

The government's entire response to that episode pissed me off. Entire suburbs were illegally placed under martial law over that. It was 1984-esque shit going on.

I don't know how much the movie represented real life, but my god, was there anything more sad than the Waterton Police Department? Two kids had their entire department running in circles.

Having lived in other cities during a terrorist attack, no it wasn't. It was an awful response. I was in Israel at the time and watching that manhunt unfold was cringe worthy. An entire city was paralyzed by what was then 1 man. That shit should never happen. Pretty much all of Boston and its northern suburbs got shut down for a day.

I'm sure Bostoners could handle being stuck inside for a day as opposed to sharing the streets with mass murderers bent on more destruction. At that point they had already maimed and killed kids - any sane person probably wasn't going out anyway until those guys were caught. You make it seem like each step taken by any level of government is akin to men in unmarked uniforms raiding your house and taking possession of all your property while dumping you in a secret cell somewhere in the south pacific.

In a world where extraordinary rendition and waterboarding were considered both ethical and routine behavior by the government prior to public exposure, I take no tyranny to be impossible.

You really don't see a problem with martial law being declared in a major metropolitan area? This was after police knew they were only hunting a single, wounded 19 year old. (his brother was already dead)

The timeline doesn't make sense to me. According to the NYT, the shots started around 10 pm, and the SWAT team finally entered the gunman's room around midnight (to find him dead). It couldn't have taken two hours, could it? From the moment it started, they knew exactly where the shots were coming from.

A firearm is a tool and I would encourage everyone (even if they don't like guns) to take a simple gun safety class so that you know how to properly operate one or at the very least know how to remove the magazine and clear the chamber.

Yep, Muzzle flash, especially at night, is pretty easy to see. With all the cameras filming, they should have been able to find this guy within minutes after initial reports.

Agreed. I am having my wife enroll in a gun safety class. It's also important to know what gunfire sounds like. A lot of people have never heard a real gun fired. Did you see the video of the guy telling everyone it was fireworks and not to worry at the same time as the shooter was spraying bullets about 20 feet away?
