When you are on a condenser replacement job what happens with the r22. Don't you have to suck the system dry and store it in a tank? What happens to those tanks? Do they make you turn it in for disposal or do you get to keep it for side jobs?

You pump it with a recovery machine into a recovery tank.
That tank when full gets processed or recycled. That recycled refrigerant can then be sold but not as profitable as Virgin refrigerants.

you cannot use recovered refrigerant in a system not owned by the same owner as the recovered system.
So if you have two systems and one gets replaced technically one could be the supply of refrigerant for the other. That never really happens tbo.

So then the compressor wasn't running. That explains the warm pipe. Sorry, I was assuming the system was running when I suggested it was low on refrigerant.

It's going to happen before the heating season. Thanks for the insight. My place has been in the family since the 1860's, not the original house on the property. Neat story, in the 80's my dad converted the unheated, cooled summer kitchen into a family room. Had all the trim and cabinets made by the amish, put the old coal/wood furnace out there for supplemental heat. When you would burn coal you could literally open all the windows in the middle of January and be comfortable.

On 3 occasions this summer my thermostat is calling for the A/C but the condenser wouldn't fire. I threw the breaker in the panel for the condenser off and then back on and on all 3 occasions it immediately fired. It did it this morning and it seems to be on days when its humid as shit that this occurs. I don't think I am low on refrigerant as it works fine for weeks at a time. Is it possible that the contactors in the condenser are sticking a bit? If so what the hell do you spray on them to lube them up?

garden hose works fine. it should be done every year, it makes a big difference. you shouldn't need to worry too much about getting the fan motor wet or anything... it should all be water resistant.

I had the air compressor out to do some framing on my deck so I threw the air gun on it and now the air leaving it feels a hell of alot less hot and the AC is keeping up better in the house. On a hot day in the high 80's I set it at 73 and it sits at 76 all damn day. Today its damn near 90 and sitting at 72.
