So you get excited watching the football players in a huddle for 40 minutes of each game or do you get more excited while they're actually running plays?

Who said anything abooot football?

I did.
I don't get it, do you have to mention it before I can?
My question is still pretty valid... which part of the football game is most exciting to you? The plays they run, or all the weirdness between plays?

Look. Everyone knows hockey sucks. Even fans of hockey know it's terrible. But they will defend it to the death.....when their team is relevant again. They ignore it like everyone else until their team is good again. They know it's bad, but it's their bad....

Ok. So you really aren't interested in discussing this, you just want to shit talk a sport that you don't like.
Cool.

It is impossible to defend hockey without comparing it to another sport. This is now a fact.

I will be happy to discuss the badness of football or basketball in your own "Why does it suck" thread. But....my thread, MY RULES.

Well I'll tell you what man.
I love me some hockey. I missed it dearly when it was taken from me by a mean, spiteful, arrogant old man who didn't want anyone to see his toy on television. I watched the motherfucker buttfuck each of my favorite players. I went from loving it to hating it.
I couldn't have been happier that that old man did the world a favor and left it. I could go back to a sport that I find endlessly fascinating to watch and play. I love me the Blackhawks. I won't forsake them now that they're experiencing difficulties.
You referenced the fair weather-ness of hockey fans here. Truth be told all sports endure this. Hockey is not at all different from other sports in this regard.
That being said...
Football is still my favorite sport. CLOSELY followed by baseball. Hockey is gaining ground on baseball since the owner of my favorite baseball team is a rampaging moron who seems to know not a goddamn thing about running a professional sports team.
So please, I ask you... why do you say hockey sucks? Not fast enough? Not enough action? Not enough affirmative action? Not enough cheerleaders? What is it?

...and what's with letting proffessional athletes fight each other? This isn't boxing. Do they get to practice fighting? Is there a heavy bag in the middle of the rink during practice?

I've seen fights in every professional sport. What are you getting at?

The refs just stand there and let them fight....until they fall. Then they are in trouble. But not real trouble. Hockey trouble...

Who breaks up the big ass bench clearing brawls in baseball.
What about the fights on the tarmac in NASCAR? Didn't one just happen?

So is that why you say hockey sucks? because there's no out of game punishment for fights?
Then hockey doesn't suck. Because there frequently IS punishment beyond the game for such infractions.

The NHL encorages participants to fight. There are penalties, but the whole thing is wink, wink. If two baseball or football players stood around punching one another, they'd be immediately thrown out of the game, then suspended for quite a while. In hockey, the get a five minute penalty and lauded as tough guys.

The NHL knows that fighting is wildly popular. In fact, it's a huge percentage of the sports mystique among fans, like crashes in NASCAR. Hockey's dependence upon extracurricular violence is somewhat telling.

No. Its because most of those people who really love hockey somehow "know" that it is the single best sport on the face of the planet and that no other sport can even come close to matching its skill and/or entertainment level.

If only they knew they were wrong.

Kind of like soccer fans.

You might be onto something if you wrote that post in 1970. I think times are changing. Bernsie is right, they're gonna find a way to fine or suspend the fighting right out of hockey.
But I'm sure that most hockey fans, and most NASCAR fans, would disagree with you. I don't watch hockey to see guys fight. If I wanted to see fights I can on any MMA card. I watch to see my team win. Most NASCAR watchers don't watch to see people die. I wouldn't want to have to argue the position that there is not such a constituency of fans for whom this is the case, but I certainly believe them to be a tiny percentage of real fans.

Earlier in this very thread, I identified myself as a NHL fan who REALLY loves hockey.
I also said that I loved NFL as #1, Baseball as #2.
I don't think most hockey fans feel the way you think they do.

Yeah, that sounds a lot more like soccer fans than hockey fans. I agree that hockey fans get defensive, but I don't think they act superior.

Soccer fans now, hoo boy.

Soccer fans are worse by far, but we don't have any of those silly people here in the USA. We do have hockey fans though.

This thread is stupid. Now we have to "start our own thread" if we want to discuss this topic in a way that the creator of thread doesn't want to. Which would be awesome, because as we all know, multiple threads on the same topic make this board great.

This thread should have been one post long: "Because I think it does".

edit: All people become defensive when someone else is telling them how much they suck because..........(fill in the blank). Again, stupid thread. But it entertains the creator of the thread just like all of the other gimmicks on this board entertain their creators, so there's that.

I disagree. I love when people use the same tired arguments about the NBA. In fact, I find most of them hilarious. But we really don't need a thread with Scorehead complaining more about "dem blacks".

Actually, there's probably more soccer fans than hockey fans

Hockey fans seem to want hockey to be treated as an equal sport. Soccer fans won't stop until you acknowledge that EVERY OTHER COUNTRY LOVES SOCCER and therefore YOU ARE A STUPID IGNORANT AMERICAN. Did you realize that there was an NFL Europe? And no one went, because AMERICAN FOOTBALL SUCKS AND SOCCER IS ACTUALLY THE REAL FOOTBALL BECAUSE THATS WHAT PEOPLE IN EUROPE CALL SOCCER THEY CALL IT FOOTBALL.

So if there's a 17 page thread titled "Why does douchebag try to play poker when he sucks so bad at it?" and you're not gonna respond at some point?

See, I think NBA fans get really defensive too. Especially when someone suggests they prefer college basketball. In fact, there's way more defensiveness around here about that than hockey.

I'm not going to defend myself in a stupid post that is obviously trying to bait me into a stupid argument. How do you think this page became 17 pages? I think Ivan accomplished his mission.

Yes to both

Edit, all 3 questions.

Next poker game I am going to bring it. I was off by game because the Hawks game was on.
