But I would point out regarding this sentence, Kaepernick began his silent, kneeling protest at the beginning of last season, not as an assault against the United States military or the flag but as a dissent against a system that has, with a great degree of consistency, failed to hold accountable police who kill unarmed citizens, that, regardless of the intentions of Kaepernick or any other players, many perceive kneeling during the anthem precisely as an assault against the United States military and/or the flag.

I find it difficult to take issue with that Villanueva guy's stance that he supports the intentions behind the protest while simply disagreeing with the form said protests are taking.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000691077/article/colin-kaepernick-explains-why-he-sat-during-national-anthem

Except he said it was against the "flag".
Quote:
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Kaepernick did a terrible job at the start. Other players have tried to change that and Trump just made it easy.

I thought the whole Kaepernick thing seemed contrived, and I didn't think anyone owed him a job. The issue now isn't Kaepernick or the NFL; it's the dumb fuck president. I would not normally kneel, but I probably would have yesterday out of spite.

The president called these guys sons of bitches and said they should be fired. Are you fucking kidding me? He says they have the "privilege" of making millions? Actually, it's not, Don. They earned that money. That's how free markets work, right? He's starting to sound like that Communist, Obama. And it's pretty hilarious that a guy whose only real accomplishment in life is being part of the Lucky Sperm Club could lecture anyone about privilege.

Bob Costas on point as usual

“Patriotism comes in many forms and what has happened is it’s been conflated with a bumper-style kind of flag-waving and with the military only so that people cannot see that in his own way Colin Kaepernick, however imperfectly, is doing a patriotic thing,” he said. “And so too are some of these other players.”

Fuck Bob Costas. He spent years bashing Dennis Rodman. For what? Being different? He's a holier-than-thou little prick. I think the hair dye has seeped into his brain.

It became catnip for bigots. I agree with this and I wouldn't have an issue with Villanueva if he didn't support it.

Yeah, I wouldn't normally kneel either, but with the dog whistling the president did on Friday and early Saturday, I would have kneeled and told the president to go fuck himself. It was a shameful act to keep the support of his base.

I think it's bullshit virtue signalling. I'd rather examine whether race had anything to do with his hatred of Rodman.

Rodman objectively was a nuisance. Teams had to send babysitters after him to make sure he didn't do anything stupid and so he showed up on time to games and practices. And that was just to preempt stupidity. I assume I don't need to get into the times where he was actually being stupid.

I think it's phony posturing masquerading as intellectualism which has always been Costas's stock in trade. It's no different than a smarmy college kid sneering at "'Murica". If you're asking if I think bumper sticker flag-waving is dumb, yeah, I do. And I don't care who stands or kneels for the anthem.

But from a larger perspective, I don't think you will find many people regardless of race, color, or creed who support cops shooting down unarmed black people in the street. If that's what the protest is about there will be many allies. But if the protest is against the very idea of America and is an attempt to paint the flag and the anthem as blood-soaked vestiges of an evil nation born of racism and built on the backs of slaves, I think finding wide support for such ideas is going to be difficult. And even if we agree that such is the case (and to a certain degree it obviously is), what is the solution? To destroy America as we know it? And what comes next? Is your lot better or worse in whatever it is that is? I'm not sure anyone who is kneeling has really given that a lot of thought.

Right....he actually changed his position to be more respectful.

He also knew, when he started this whole thing, that he was gonna take his lumps. He said he was ready to face the consequences. He's not one of these crazy shitlibs whom I cannot stand (his girlfriend might be).

It has to suck for him that he's put actual money where his mouth is and he gets screwed out of a job but meanwhile half the league is doing the same thing and most fans don't really give a shit anymore.

Yeah, that does suck. But he knew what he was risking.

If half the league is doing it, though, maybe someone will pick him up.
