I think the bid was $2600 or so for two separate units. The whole project was over $50K. One family stepped up for the base system (not mine), others chipped in for extras like UV, wifi t-stat, etc.

Sounds like it matched up with my quote. Can anyone at your church tell a difference with the UV system?

If you're paying more than $800 for an Air Scrubber or Remes system you're paying more than you need to to get one installed.

If you're paying $800, you're paying $800 for very little actual benefit.

Think of what these systems claim to actually do. They're extraordinary claims.

Another thing I'll tell you. I had a customer who raved about how awesome their UV system worked and how happy they were to have it. Claimed to not be sick one day since it was installed. Awesome, says i, I'm pleased you are happy with your purchase. I get to the basement to start the maintenance and I find that the system was not powered up, the transformer was improper. They used a 10va transformer when you need a 40va transformer to make it work. It wasn't on one day.

 Oops!

Yeah, I was skeptical before you provided that detailed information on those systems. I definitely won’t be getting it now.

Look, here's the deal. I'm responsible for more revenue at my company than any other technician. But I get shit from my boss all the time because I refuse to sell certain high percentage product like for example these air scrubbers. And I don't ever upsell at maintenance calls unless it's necessary or something that benefits the customer. I do sell more replacement furnaces and boilers than anyone se does but that's because I am significantly more thorough than anyone else is at my calls. If I end up at your house I'm checking deep into the system. And maybe you'll get some news you don't want. But what you won't have is a 600 repair bill this year and a 1200 repair bill the next year then the 3500 replacement bill costing you 5300 instead of the 3500 it should have been.
I put this shit into my house first. A couple years ago I recommended an ecobee thermostat to a friend/board member when i diagnosed their issue being the thermostat. He had a carrier infinity thermostat. That fucker is 800 bucks. The ecobee I think I put in for him for less than 300. And it's a better stat, I know this because it's the last of 5 or 6 thermostat I tested in my house. I won't test any more because this thing is great and I love it and I don't want another one anymore.
So when I say that these things are expensive trash understand that I know how this works. The tech who sells it to you gets 50 to 100 bucks commission. The sales manager or service manager gets a commission too. Then there's the company profit. And aerus profit. And for what so you can breathe h2o2 and o3 and bleach your upholstery? Get a fresh smell (ozone) and get otherwise zero benefit except for profit to a tech and sales manager?
It's a garbage technology and I'll never endorse it.

And this is exactly why I asked for your opinion. It’s greatly appreciated.

No. I just hooked it up right. Seacrest, we can both agree, no sense ruining someone else's faith with truth and science.

I only see it making any sort of sense in a hospitality or medical situation where the circulation is turned on 100% of the time. Home use of UV makes no sense.

I agree. With air changes per hour at 6 or more, i could see a benefit to sterilizing the air. But in a house, you would have to run the fan all the time and nobody does that, no would even make much sense because the only people in your house is your family.

Anyone got a wall mounted garage heater? They don't seem to be that expensive. I assume they don't do much with the garage open since you know, that's a big door.

They work better when you keep your garage door closed.

Or just crank the heat up in your car with the windows down. That'll heat up an enclosed garage in no time.

The infrared ceiling mounted gas ones seem efficient enough if you were to spend a lot of time in a heated garage. I figure I’d we ever build a new shop (doubtful) we will put coils in the pad and hear that way.

I started getting quotes for a new shop before covid, and have put it on hold through the price gouging, In-floor heat, A/C and a wash bay are must-haves at this point. Still mulling over 16 or 20 foot sidewalls. I have recognized this building will be only for me; no big-time farmer will buy the place and center his operation here, no hobby/horse farmer needs a shop like I am planning. Just can't pull the trigger for such a selfish use of potential retirement funds.

Turned the heat on for the first time this winter this morning. No heat. AC guy came later in the afternoon and fixed the wiring and other stuff with my Nest. Unfortunately, when checking the heat pump, he discovered a leaking coil. Tried to sell me on a $2,900 repair (replacement) or purchasing a new unit. Their cheapest unit is $9,500 (Ameristar 14 sier). I know prices are inflated a bit but I thought those quotes were ridiculous.

I know someone who has gone years with a leaking coil. Any thoughts?

if the leak really is in the coil unit youre pretty fucked. you may try stop leak at that point, but likely wont last long.

i would figure out what the part number is and try to source yourself, and find someone to do the swap and recharge. hopefully your compressor is ok still. $2900 for a full service (source part and install) is about what i would expect. the part probably costs $1200 their cost, then they markup and add labor.

What's leaking? Evaporator coil or condenser coil?

The indoor coil? It’s the coil in the attic (heat pump, not the unit outside).

how old is the whole system? if youre worried about $3k to replace the evap, i wouldn't worry much about replacing the whole system. thats a sure fire way to replace a lot of parts that are in good condition.

A complimentary leak search found a leak. I find this shocking.
Is it heating in heat pump mode?
Let's charge it up in the spring and see how long it lasts. I'm not replacing a leaking coil or replacing a system in total when "pressures are ok".

isnt it also weird they found improper wiring, when i assume it was working at one point with the nest thermostat?

I think he said he just turned it on. If he has a heat pump I can see he maybe forgot the O wire for the reversing valve. Pretty common.
Ron are you in or around my service area?

i guess in any case, if the leak was problematic, the a/c wouldn't work either, regardless of wiring problems or not.

Yup.
A heat pump just air conditions the outside just like dad punched you in the face for when we were kids.

i still dont understand why a heat pump is considered more efficient that electric heat... i guess its just an air circulation problem with baseboards. electric heat is nearly 100% efficient, and theres no way you can tell me compressing gas is a better way to do it, but thats what they claim. especially when heat pumps dont even work in the dead of winter around here.
