We got to campus eleven days before school began in order to clean the house. (We lived in a scholarship house.) So it was basically us 25 guys and the townies. We were blind drunk one night and walked over to the quad to get high. (Not sure why.) Anyway, some locals came by because they wanted to talk to "real white boys." We got 'em high and then we started smoking cigarettes.

"Man!" one of the locals said. "You smokin' them squares, too?"

We were like, what? Then he said cool people smoked dope while "squares" smoked cigarettes. I hadn't heard that before . . . but I think I have called cigarettes "squares" ever since.
