Using the lack of a response to a question or request as a platform for wild speculation and insinuation is incredibly similar between the two instances.

"We need Obama's birth certificate because we don't know whether he has family or friends in al qaeda."

is very similar to

"We need Trump's tax returns because we don't know whether he's going to direct the Fed to pay off his personal debt to Russian gangsters."

It's the wild insinuation via speculation ("I'M JUST ASKING QUESTIONS!!") that is the unethical bit, it has nothing to do with the reasonableness of the original request.

That's definitely true, but it's no reason not to release his returns. And if he had released them in a normal time frame during the campaign they would not have been met with the same type of scrutiny.

I've often pointed out the heavily biased way the media is covering Trump and it's been characterized as a "defense" of him which could not be further from the truth. But Terry's Peeps and others have mentioned more than once that Trump does not help himself with the way he behaves. That is the truth of course, but still no justification for throwing all standards of coverage out the window.

Similarly, the fact that Trump has never been accepted into the highest levels of New York society doesn't excuse his boorishness and vulgarity. But neither are such boorishness and vulgarity any reason to align oneself with the naked classism of old money New Yorkers.

One thing his tax returns would likely show is that he is nowhere near being a billionaire as he likes to claim. Also- and this is one of the reasons New York society has rejected him- he gives almost no money to charity. This fucker is no philanthropist.

This is a story I read that shows how really despicable Trump is. There was a good chess team at a poor black school in the Bronx. They were trying to travel to a big tournament but they were $5000 short of the money they needed to be able to go. Trump showed up in his limo and came in and gave a speech to the team and he pulled out one of those big fake checks for $1,000,000. Cameras were snapping and everyone was smiling. After all the reporters were gone Trump went into his wallet and handed the chess coach $200 in cash.

I don't get this argument of his "dodging" taxes. It's immaterial. If I knew of a legal loophole to use to avoid paying my taxes, I'd sure as hell use it. He was correct when he said it made him "smart."

You're laughing, but really there is one single trait that makes the guy an asshole and that is his enormous ego. Everything else that he says or does comes directly from that. I was watching a Chomsky interview where he spoke about Trump and Chomsky basically kept coming back to the fact that nobody knows Trump's positions on anything. "I suspect he doesn't really have any. Other than 'ME!'" (Also, Chomsky said, "Trump says many things that I would say, but for completely different reasons." )

Good. It was a total publicity stunt. The release should have been nothing more than a tweet linking to a photo of the pages.

Instead she built everyone up over two hours, then made a 20 minute fear speech that insinuated she could prove it all by these tax leaks.

The result was a big nothing, and even her guest that got the leaks said it was nothing. It was almost like she didn't talk to the guy before he went on air with her.

They should have just told Trump to release it himself. When I saw it last night I knew Trump leaked it. I saw today that it was the client's copy that was released. Nothing about those 2 pages made him look bad in any way.
