To be fair to Pulte, all builders hate union workers. Of course, they would rather hire cheaper labor. On a Montalbano job, they tried hiring non-union guys to do the gutters, despite being contractually obligated to hire union labor. One the rest of the trades found out, we walked off the job. We never saw those gutter guys again.

I think you are minimizing the expense.

I'm also not sure that people appreciate brick as much as they used to but it might just be a function of the cost of brick changing tastes. There is some very nice siding out there now but that can also get expensive. I really don't like the look where the front façade is brick but it is siding on the other three sides. They usually use very cheap siding on those type of homes.

Not at all. It could be as much as $30-$40k. If you are being smart, and buying a house within your means, rather than what the bank pre-approval was, you can swing it. Especially, when you figure in long term factors, such as resale value, and lower energy bills.

Personally I don't think much of most new construction. It's usually a game of which corners did they cut (to me).

The one that really baffles me are where some or all of the master bath is open to the rest of the master suite. How many people want to live in a Sybaris knock off?

Depends on the builder. You can choose a cheap one like denis did or get a high quality one.

Older houses that get gutted and then redone can have just as many corners cut with an outside that is still old with outdated standards. I just don't really get the concept of redoing everything in a really old house and keeping the frame. Then again I'm not a Cubs fan.

we had always thought about building our own place, but it's the most expensive thing to do, apparently. We make under 70k combined, so we're obviously having to scrimp and save, and frankly we're hoping there's another economic downturn so we can acutally afford a house out here

Non-aesthetic things mostly. Cheaper flooring that still looks good. Poor frame design or inadequate insulation. Using caulk to hide gaps.

When we were looking for a house there was one that looked absolutely amazing in pictures. We asked our realtor why we weren't seeing it. He said the house was badly made but designed to look great. He said I'll still take you there. The floor that looked magnificent literally creaked on every step because it was made of the cheapest flooring possible. I don't remember what it was but it was the cheapest fake hardwood. That house was like 3 years old. He pointed out a bunch of small things too many of which you wouldn't even normally notice especially before you buy it. He also had stories of others finding no insulation in the walls and as mentioned before major issues with duct work.

The sad part for the current owners was this wasn't a home that they had bought for well below the market rate of other comparable homes. I believe I looked later and they took a massive hit on the sale price they got from the builder.

You know what looks awful, when they take a lot that originally had something like a basic ranch, tear it down and put a mini mansion on it. Norridge is just one example where I have seen that a ton. Literally no backyard or space between the next house.

Windows as well. Cheapest windows they can possible find.

At least you get an elevator in your house. It's like living in the Loop!
