13 years of Lutheran education=all the Jesus with none of the ruler whacking

My concern was the grading scales in college, where 90-100 is A, 80-90 is B, etc. So 60% score is still a D. Really?

CPS has that scale. In my mind I remember 93-100 being an A back then.

I guess it is somewhat nice that there is more pressure on the parents and less on the teacher but I dont think this will suddenly make more parents want to be involved in their kids education and those same parents will still blame teachers for their retarded kids.

They should care about the tests, for sure, but would it be the worst thing in the world to have less homework and more tests? Most homework is busy work or grade-padding, not everyone has the home environment or the hours in a day to grind out homework night after night. By middle school, when there's little/no coordination between teachers as to how much homework they're collectively assigning, it gets out of hand. I'm not saying no homework, no grades, but at a point a lot of it just rewards being Good At School. Just make it matter, y'know?

I kind of think that is the point of an A. It should be a reward for being good at school. Shouldnt kids that work hard or that are smarter than others be rewarded with better grades? And dumb lazy kids be "rewarded" with a C. I dont see a problem "padding" a kids grade when they go home and do their homework rather than sitting on their tablet and doing shit all night long. Hey Lama, how about a little something for the effort? I know it wont necessarily make kids smarter when they do homework but I do think they should be rewarded for the effort rather than lumped in a group with every other kid.

I'm probably just speaking from my experience, specifically my resentment of peers who had the intellectual curiosity of a cue ball and would never strike anyone as deep thinkers but still pulled down 4.0s because they phlegmatically churned out the worksheets and extra credit for when they didn't ace the tests or write great papers. It certainly appeared effortless to me at the time, but of course it was more like a duck paddling like hell to glide along the lake. Of course I would prefer a system that leaned hard on class discussion and a few big assessments and went easy on after-hours drudgery, that was the only way I ever thrived.

I think there could be a better way but from what I have seen, standards based grading only takes the drive and incentive from kids willing to put forth a little effort and likes the meager reward of a good grade.

Oh, I've just been free-associatin' in this whole thread, I have absolutely no idea what standards-based grading is. Guess I got caught not doing the reading!

I don't think I have given homework ten times this entire year. I also teach 90 minute block classes. I do not see the point in giving much homework when you spend 7.5 hours a week in math class.
