a few years back we were looking for a car. I'm a taller guy so fitting into a sedan comfortably can be challenging, and the prices on the larger SUV's were more than I wanted to handle. We have a good history with Toyota, and the salesman we were dealing with asked if we had ever considered a pickup truck. I always liked the idea of having one but my wife wasn't really on board with it, but the guy told us to test drive the Tacoma and the Tundra, and at that time both of them, and in particular the Tacoma, were readily available and more affordable than any of their SUV options. My wife drove the Tacoma, loved it, I fit in it well, and we went with it. It has been a great little truck and very handy to have. It looks like a toy compared to the monster trucks on the roads these days but it drives great, has 4WD and didn't break the bank.

I've had a Tacoma since September 2019. It's drives like my Mom walks....slow as hell. I have no concerns on it's reliability and it will last a long time, but I really regret not getting the Tundra, or a lower trim model with the traditional 6.5' bed. The 5.5' bed on this thing is too short. Tacomas are now incredibly popular....very few available and I could likely sell it for what I paid for it brand new, which is nuts (yargh!). As much I'm as I'm tempted to sell it and get the truck I really want, I'm going to take the better financial decision and just drive it into the ground for it's full life.

agreed on the bed being short. It hasn't been too much of a problem since im not usually hauling a lot of big stuff around but a larger bed could have been handy in a few situations. not enough to make me buy a bigger more expensive truck though.

I finally snapped....my Tacoma was paid off and I had another project where I couldn't fit what was needed in the bed of my Tacoma. After further review, it's only a 5' bed not 5.5'.
I now have brand new Toyota Tundra with a bed that measures 6'7". God it feels great to be back in a full-size pickup truck.

My wife is fucking pissed

She loved that stupid Tacoma, but I was the one driving it and I paid for it. Multiple times I offered to sell the Subaru instead....she declined due to "gas mileage".

My wife is one of these Suze Orman types who keeps a maintenance log for our vehicles. When we're spending more for repairs than we would for a car payment, it's time to get a new car. My 2012 C Class finally reached that point. I would have driven that car forever if it had made economic sense.

I bought a 2024 CLA250. I really love this car. It's all computer. I will say that a real "car guy" would probably find a lot of fault regarding the way it drives in the city. The 8 speed transmission is kind of janky when you're stopping and going but it's super smooth in the higher gears out on the highway. The car shuts off when you're stopped. And it's what Mercedes calls a "mild hybrid" which utilizes an ISG system I don't fully understand. I think that's why it's a little rough during stop-and-go city driving but I'll take the trade-off in gas mileage.

More than once I have floated the idea of a Tundra past my wife. Her reaction was similar

Congrats. :thumleft:

That's called the "Auto Stop / Start" feature. It's a really stupid "feature" on cars since 2015 or so. It's supposed to preserve gas mileage, but what it does is tax your starter. Total racket. There should be a button to de-activate, but it resets on every time you start the car. Kits are available to keep that shut de-activated for about $100-150. My new Tundra has it, but it only activates when you push the brake pedal fully down.

One of the keys to a happy marriage is separate checking accounts and full autonomy on spending.

My newer F150 must have been on a lot after someone ordered it and changed their mind. Anyway I have it and the window sticker shows the order had a $50 charge for Ford to not put in the auto stop. So I do not have to be annoyed by it which is nice.

I think I read thought that either Ford won’t do it anymore or Feds stopped them.

I think there is a way to turn the auto-stop off, but I haven't looked into it yet. My wife always reads the entire manual when we get a new car so she probably knows. I don't mind it so much. I'm not sure if it is actually saving gas or not, but I can say that the car is a lot better in that regard than any Benz I've ever had. Of course, it's the smallest engine I've ever had too.

The start/stop shutoff looks like an “A” inside of a circle. On one of my cars, you can permanently shut it off with the specific key owner. On another, I have to press it every time, which isn’t that big .

On the other four, it’s a mix of both.

It wasn't hard for me to find. It's right there below the start button. The car runs a lot smoother with it off. We'll see how much it affects the mileage.

I remember when these things first came out and I read a comment on some news article talking about how they save gas in Russia because they turn the car off for like 5 minutes at a stop light and they all get out and talk with other people.

I didn't think it was true but I was convinced that the autostop was a good feature as long as you are alright feeling like you got a light punch to your body as it shut off at a stop sign.
