Spanking a toddler though is a little different than punching or slapping a child

I have spanked all of my daughters at times in their lives, mainly when they were under about 8 years of age. As they got older I have found that taking away privileges is more effective way of disciplining them.

However you go about it, kids need to have a fear of negative consequences for their actions. In doing a lot of work recently at our local school that is the biggest issue I see that exists in so many today.

Not too long ago I was around an 8th grade girl who was being suspended out of school for 10 days. She was waiting for her parents to come pick her up. She was laughing and goofing off talking about how she was going to sleep in for the next 2 weeks and have a vacation. I thought back to when I was that age and if I was waiting for my parents to pick me up for a suspension that would have been the worst time of my life. There would have been no sleeping in and no vacation at all. I would have worked my ass off and had any privileges I had at that age taken away for a long time. That seems to be really lacking today in our world.

I agree 100%. I spent a few years as a teacher and I saw the same exact thing. Parents didn't want to parent and teachers would either let things go or the deans would let things go, or the parents would always come to the student was in trouble or the teachers would try to discipline or write the student up but would see little support from "The Deans!" and would quickly learn to not do anything and just make it through the day.

Sounds like she will be a pleasant student in high school.

Out of school suspension is useless for the kid if parents will not enforce consequences. It used ot be if you were suspended from school you could not make the work up. That has been changed in most places. So basically it is like a vacation for kids whose parents don't give a shit.
