I voted yes, but I'm not positive you will enjoy it. Sometimes, you did actually have to be there- see how un-funny and un-edgy MASH is now 30 years after it last aired, or how Seinfeld really is about nothing. This show was absolutely cutting edge then, and right in my wheelhouse when I was trying to become an adult. Now that I am one (I think), I really don't need it anymore.

"space ghost" was fantastic but it also benefited by being something unique at the time it was on. if it had started after "weird" cartoons saturated cartoon network, it would probably have a hard time standing out. even though it's hilarious.

you can never predict someone's sense of humor. people cannot believe i don't like "family guy" but i love "the simpsons", "south park", and have enjoyed earlier seasons of "archer". i get shit for liking "tim & eric".

there are some episodes i'd steer someone toward, if they were just starting with the simpsons. definitely "Flaming Moe's", "Kamp Krusty", "Boy Scouts in the Hood", and "Homer's Odyssey". Seasons 3-5 were extremely consistent.

Good. Edgy doesn't always mean funny. I just want a show to be funny.

I generally enjoy South Park but it seems to me that too often they spend more time trying to push boundaries than to create a funny storyline. That isn't really even edgy as much as it is in your face.

You should definitely watch seasons 1 through 9. Those seasons were all time classics, genius writing. Season 10 was spotty and then the show became a complete train wreck after that. Its quality took a complete nosedive and the show became horrendous. Sadly there are now more bad episodes than classics.

You can't skip season 4. That was arguably the greatest season.

It seems like a resounding "no." And if I do decide to watch it, I should definitely skip seasons 3-8.

You're right. I forgot Homer at the Bat was in Season 3.

What the fuck did you watch on tv growing up?

Based on his age, he is of the time that his parents started him on Barney and Friends, then he moved on to Keenan and Kel and the other assorted Nickelodeon shit shows, while his parents did not allow him to watch network tv because it was trash...except for fucking Full House.

My cousin is the same way. She's never seen an episode of the Simpsons, and will swear up and down that the 2 greatest shows in the history of television are Full House and Rugrats.

I disagree with the train wreck comment after season 9. While the hit rate may have begun to drop at that point there were still a lot of "classics" in seasons 10-15.

My kid is absolutely obsessed with the Simpsons. Has been ever since she watched the marathon. She's too young to get a lot of the jokes, but she is a trivia guru at this point.

hear hear.... are you a blue/jam guy at all? did you ever get into his radio programs? i think one of my dead laptops has a whole bunch of soulseek downloads of his old radio programs that i never quite got to, so when i get an external laptop HD caddy/connector thing i'll have to get those off of there.

I was more into the earlier Alan Partridge radio shows, though I had the Blue shows saved on a similarly dead laptop. I think I had them in the same folder as Jeff Mangum's WFMU shows, which was kind of unfortunate  It looks like they're on the Wayback Machine now at least.

Anytime Homer wiggles his fingers, or puts on his half glasses, you'll know you're about to be served some of the good stuff.

Also, if at all possible, buy stock in CutCo, Edgecom and Interslice.

In the first ten seasons, Principal Skinner was just a marvelous character. The Nam flashbacks always got me.
