I'm generalizing with "regular guy".

But I go hunting every December in Salem, IL which is an hour south of Effingham. You can plainly see there aren't the economic opportunities around there that we have in Chicago.

Oddly, America wants to isolate and shit on them simply because he was born in an area with more opportunities. Quite ruthless of him to denigrate his fellow man like he has in this thread.

Hmm. Not sure that analogy is perfect but I wont dismiss it.

The poor doesnt usually have power and the state does

I don't think most farmers are multimillionaires. The ones I know aren't. Maybe if you count machinery.

The fact that we have to triage the country is not the fault of poor people. I would love to have Chicago save Illinois, but more than that I want Chicago to save itself. There are are millions of poor people in and around Chicago who have had their schools closed, services cut and safety nets revoked.

The ugly truth is Chicago and Cook Co are more important than the rest of Illinois. There are more people, more opportunity and still a culture worth perserving. The decision we have to make, whether we want to or not, is whether Illinois or Chicago will be left to die. The catch is, if we don't save Chicago then Illinois will die anyways.

Agree, not most, but many. ....and much of that is management skills. Its a full blown business and the farmer cant be farming and running the business.

They are some very rich plumbers, HVAC guys and eletricians and they dont do work in the field.

And really it's not about saving Chicago. It's just buying time. As long as the corrosive force of capitalism is allowed to fester in the US the threat of economic catastrophe will hang over the entire American Empire. We just happen to be at the point now where things have gotten bad enough that swaths of this country have to be sacrificed just to buy ourselves the time to maybe one day turn things around.

Chicago could run away with Cook Co and maybe a couple other collar counties and do OK at the expense of Illinois (which will go bankrupt immediately) for maybe a couple decades. But eventually the current policy of privatizing gains and socializing losses that is totally married to capitalism will claim everything.

I grew up all around farming and there may have been 1 family that I knew that I would consier multi-millionaires. And part of that money may have been handed down.

Okay, so now it's not just "Chicago could leave and Illinois would burn..." it's "Chicago and a bunch of counties could leave and Illinois would burn..."

And the United States doesn't practice capitalism nor does it practice a free market. That should be plainly obvious to see.

Strike 2

So did I, but its different from when we grew up. Smaller farmers barely exist anymore.

What you are missing here is that it isn't about saving anyone. Chicago and Cook County pay more in taxes because they make more money. The same logic you are using here is what the 1% use to bash the takers who get their hard earned money.

Ultimately, you are agreeing with the tea party and the 1%'ers.

In reality though, Chicago should just form it's own country. Then they wouldn't have to subsidize those in Illinois or in North Dakota.

New employees should have a 401K. Obviously nothing they can do about existing employees at this point accept shut up and pay. In 70 years, everyone will be on 401K.

Uh, why not? Detroit gave a massive haircut to pensions for current employees and current retirees...Federal Bankruptcy law taking precedence over State Constitution guarantees.

I was reading about the Driftless Area the other day and how the land in western Wisconsin/eastern Iowa precludes the sort of large-scale farming seen in flatter lands, part of why the area has leaned Democratic despite its rural character.

This is exactly right, the small scale "poor" farmer has been consolidated to a few "rich" that hold most of the land. They in turn run the farm like a business and hire out people to do the actual work. My grandpa still owns a small farm in iowa, but it won't be passed down to anyone in the family and it will be sold off and consolidated into someone elses fields.

Regardless if it's possible to cut into the existing pensions, it will never happen. too many politicians tied into that money. they will never cut their own money supply, even though that's what needs to happen.

Illinois and Chicago go hand-in-hand in stupidity. Even as separate governing bodies, I bet they'd end up in the same disaster. How did cashing out on the Illinois Tollway or the Lottery work for the state? Then we have Chicago cashing out on the gold mine that is parking.

Morons.

Okay guys you all are not pointing fingers at the bad guys in this problem.
The teacher/firemen/police officers are not the ones who did wrong here. They paid into the system like they where supposed to for the 7 years that are in question. It is the politicians in both the City and State level that did not. Not only did they not pay into the fund they "borrowed" from it, more like stole, all of them should be thrown out and put on trail for fraud. They where running a ponzi scheme. Plus, with the city in such financial crisis why are they still doing wasteful speeding like the project that is being done on Roosevelt between State and the Lake? How much is that costing us? Did we really need all those flower pots? Quoting Ronald Regan" We don't have a tax problem ,we have a spending problem".
In the city the only new hires who are on the old pension are Police,Fire and teachers. Rest are on a 401k type plan.
How about fixing the pension the politicians get? You know he multiple ones people like Roland Burris get or Like Claypool is going to get.
The garbage fee, that is a fucking joke, I want to see if it is going to be a 100% collected from everyone or if a certain segment is going to get a waiver.

Will Forrest Claypool get a pension or will he just go around moving from government job to government job until he keels over and dies?
