I can't wrap my head around it. Say our system collapses or there is no access to the internet do you just say I'm paying in bitcoin and it's on my puter? It can't ever be a tangible asset right? Also it's the diamond issue. It has value because others think it does but it's value is really worthless. If we are at that point aren't you going to be trying to get food and water and defend what you have?

Your first point is valid. Obviously, crypto is worthless if there is no access to the Internet. But the same will be true for the crypto-yuan that may be the world's reserve currency in twenty years. It's just that it will also be controlled by a dictatorship rather than being a decentralized currency of The People. Governments are terrified of Bitcoin. It has the power and potential to completely reorder the world in a positive way, but also in a way that would strip the Establishment of power. That's why you have supposed advocate for The People, Liz Warren, railing against crypto.

The part I bolded can be said about any commodity that isn't a basic human necessity, i.e. everything expect food, water, land. The only reason the U.S. Dollar or gold have value is because people accept that they do. In the event of a complete societal collapse carrots may have more value than gold. You won't be able to eat your gold.

It's like my Libertarian crypto-mining friends say: Money is a human concept.

Not for nothing but the inherent properties of gold make it tremendously useful/valuable as a material with incalculable uses commercially, industrially, and technologically.

In the kind of post-apocalyptic scenario that I'm discussing there isn't really going to be a commercial, industrial, or technological base. I have 100 gallons of fresh water. I'm not really going to give you any for an ounce of gold.

money and food for the win. in the end, living next to freshwater lakes will prove to be intelligent. Florida, New York, Arizona, et al, good luck.

Uh, when is the last time you looked at a map of New York?

New York will be underwater, as will Florida. Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.

In what year will New York be swallowed by the ocean?

It's always my favorite global warming prediction. The most important city arguably in the world is going to be under water because the oceans are going to raise 10 inches.

Grabbed VZ today. It is yielding nearly 5%. Throwing off $30B+ in cash per year. Go ex dividend in a few days.

Uh, pretty sure that New York's proximity to the Lakes Ontario, Erie, and Champlain are sufficient supply of drinking water.

Techs continue to get routed. I keep wanting to get into PayPal, but the valuation is still crazy. And I am perplexed by NetFlix. I stayed away from those names at much lower prices, but their businesses continue to impress.

And PINS, hmmm.

The problem if you have any substantial crypto holdings is what do you do with the funds if you pull em out of crypto? The markets? Real estate? A retail food franchise? If you foresee a correction imminent in crypto, swap out of investment tokens like btc or eth or whatever into stable coins and stake those stable coins at anywhere from 10 to 30% APY. And then swap back into the speculative coins once you think crypto's headed positive again.

Nope. Stable coin interest rates have tanked also.

Those interest rates are out there but no one is taking it. 4% is the reality.

What’s this story about Tether being made out of whole cloth?

11.5 billion + 5 billion + 1 billion + another half billion = 18 billion dollars of nothing and no one

Questions about tether's viability have been knocked about since it was called Real or Master coin and was only on the btc blockchain. I dunno, it's probably no better or worse than any other stablecoin. If the FDIC decides to extend deposit insurance to crypto seems like USDC would be the first to be brought in under that umbrella of protection. I think USDC is probably better funded on the back-end than USDT, tho tether claims they have reserves to match the tether in circulation 1 to 1.

Paypal getting hammered in after hours for a very slight EPS miss. I have always wanted to own this one, but the valuation is crazy. If this opens sub $150 tomorrow, I may nibble.

Looks like you’ll get that chance. Also, have you heard about this Google company? Seems like they’re on to big things.

Lol, I have heard of Alphabet.

Pins reports tonight. I cannot buy ahead of that. I may dip into PayPal. Their new user guidance was a disaster……but long term, it is a great business model. Kramer losing his mind over his trust owning PayPal.

Thinking of options plays too.

never bought individual stocks before. What's the best platform to do that?

I use Etrade. Trading is free, but because they sell order flow. I would probably look elsewhere if starting over, maybe Fidelity.

Commodity prices are sky high right now, corn over $6 and beans above $15. Depending on your outlook, you could wager on some futures, lots of room to go lower. Maybe some frozen orange juice futures?

Go with pork bellies, which are used to make bacon, which you might find in a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich.

No. The only way they make more money is opening a shitload new shops. Their food sucks and wont be getting a whole lot better.

I went with a call option play on PINS ahead of earnings. I am hoping expectations are beat down enough for a relief rally. Went with mid April $30 calls.

I have accounts at Schwab, Vanguard and Fidelity. For individual stocks I prefer schwab.

Being in the restaurant business I tend to shy away from restaurant stocks. Except for McDonalds which can be argued is also a real estate company.

And am lucky to have a few scraps of GOOG and GOOGL laying about :cheese:

As for JC, often whatever he says, I go opposite

I had a guy trying to sell me variable annuity life products tell me McDonald’s was a real estate company. Sounded like he read it out of a sale pitch book.

Franchise companies are royalty models, but certainly that particular one has a lot of prime real estate.
