install 220 in your garage and you can get a pretty good charge overnight. like 10-20 miles of driving an hour. places will ahve what they call destination chargers that charge a little bit faster than that. they are all over most cities (parking garages and what not) but then there are superchargers which can charge you to near full in under an hour.

Tesla basically has two types of cars. Expensive ones that don't suck. Inexpensive ones that suck. I believe they all require a special charging station in your garage. It costs money to charge outside your house but it's cheaper than gas. They are building more and more of them all over the place.

We're just getting to the end of the "early adopter" phase on electric cars where people want the latest tech, are prepared to be annoyed by the problems because it is cool to be in public driving a Tesla, and help do a test of the technology so they can actually make it well.

You can just plug it's charger cable in to your regular 110v outlet in the garage (provided you have a high enough amp rating on that circuit).

You can have a 220v line installed, which then cuts any charging time of the 110v roughly in half.

Earlier in this thread, I posted the charging times.

110v to get a full charge is 33 - 44 hours. So a 220v line would be 17 - 22 hours. Now that's to a full charge, Charging time from 80% - 100% is slowed to protect the battery (heat is a larger factor when charging). So getting to 80% would be a bit less.

When you start getting to 3.6kW, 7kW, 22kW would be the typical charger you would find at work, at a grocery store (Woodman's for example I believe has charging stations) and those times to 80% would be much, much less.

When Brick says Tesla makes two kinds, expensive ones that don't suck and inexpensive ones that don't suck, I'm not sure what is defining as "suck". The newer Model 3 isn't as attractive as the Model S. But being a newer iteration, it charges faster/better, has better battery tech, and is still fairly quick, mind you not as insane as Ludicrous or Plaid mode in the S, but still probably quicker than most vehicles on the road now.

The cheap models of Teslas are some of the least reliable cars on the road. The owners don't really care because it's part of the early adopter experience but an equivalent gas powered car that broke as often as a Tesla would probably be destined for cancellation due to low sales or at least in line for a complete redesign.

I think that's all models though. Several of the S guys have made complaints about it too. Then a few have gotten 3's and they rave about the improvements over the S just from a progession of advancement thing.

You can call it whatever you want. Those are your opinions. I was simply asking for clarification on what you meant by "suck".

I think perspective comes heavy on this niche of vehicle right now. If you're comparing it to a high end Benz, Bimmer, Audi, Lexus, etc... Yea, maybe it doesn't quite measure up. And I guess as those manufacturer's really start hammering out EV's, that direct comparison will be weighed on heavily.

However, right now, I think what you see, is that EV purchasers tend to climb the scale as they progress in their EV ownership experience. By that I mean, several guys I know have Chevy Volt's or Cadillac's version, the ELR, then moved up to a Tesla. In which case, the Tesla is a significant upgrade (especially vs. the Volt). But the same is true along the lines of nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ion, Chevy Bolt, Chevy Volt etc... As they progress, Tesla's are the top of the heap.

When Audi recently came out with their latest E-Tron (I think that's it anyway), A lot of Tesla owners laughed. Why? It doesn't have the range, replenishment capacity, performance, and was more expensive than a Tesla. So while Audi may have better interior digs, it sorta misses the mark on the key components that make the EV market what the EV market wants.

Tesla's are some of the least reliable cars on the road. Even most Tesla owners seem to understand that though many seem to view it as a badge of honor being the early adopters. It will be interesting to see what happens now that the big car companies seem to be ready to enter the market with actual effort now.

At some point, Tesla needs to transition from cool cars to good cars.

Yea, and I'm not arguing that they are reliable. So please don't take it that way.

The next few years are going to be interesting. With most, if not all manufacturer's putting a goal post up for the end of producing ICE powered vehicles, they're all really ramping up their game. So if Elon doesn't want to be the bottom of the barrel, there are quite a few things he needs to sort out to maintain a competitive advantage.

The problem (well 2 actually) with the Pacifica Hybrid are;

1) You lose the key feature of the Chrysler mini-van... second row Stow-N-Go seating. The well where the seats fold in to are where the battery is on the Hybrid model.
2) It doesn't offer a shit load of range TBH.

Say what you will about not needing that Stow-N-Go, it is one of the most useful features... So much so, I wore out one of the mechanisms on our 2007 (with it), that as the seat rotates in to the floor, it pulls it inward. So I had to give it a little "assistance" as I put it in to the floor. Our 2015 with it, they still get used, but not as much as the kids are older and since I still had the '07, I used that for hauling taller items.
