Putin was originally part of the KGB's attempt to depose Gorbachev in 1991. But Putin then quickly sold out his KGB brothers after he saw their little coup attempt wasn't gonna work. :D

Putin might think that, but Obama's the guy who took out Osama Bin-Laden (and John McCain, and Mitt Romney and Killary Clinton). Obama coolly led plucky Somali pirates within sniper range and then took them the fuck out. And Obama weekly signs off on a list of mofos to drone to death across the planet.

^^Anyone willing to bike around the south side looking like that is not someone you wanna mess with.

Remember in that recent New Yorker interview, Obama's concerned about how his "paragraph" in the history books will read. I don't think he wants Putin to upstage him in that paragraph; or for the final sentence be the lead into the restoration of the Soviet Union.

Fair enough. While I think Obama's every bit as tough as Putin fronts to be, I don't think President Obama wins election if he's outwardly a tough-guy like Putin. Not (necessarily) saying Obama's mom-jeans and such are a deliberate affectation. But the less-macho aspects of Obama's public persona likely made his election as the first black President a more palatable thing for white America.

we haven't had a tough guy president since reagan. and while he'd be more appropriate in this situation...obama can go out for a smoke and be cool.

Obama should have just stayed the fuck out of this. Russia and China want this confrontation. We cannot win it.

No he should have gotten into it because it is our responsibility to get into it. We can win but will we try to.

I could agree with that if we could see those results in negotiations. Everyone says he's a nice guy but no one says he's a tough negotiator. That's pretty clear based on the results. Attacking Russia would be a risk that Obama would be hesitant or afraid to take.

Because when we convinced them to give up their nuclear weapons we promised to support and stand with them in the 90's. To renege on that would create more issues than possibly crushing Russia.

Attacking first? Yes. Getting hands dirty because "we" stood with Ukraine against Russian agression? No.

Sticky situation, but as Nas says, this is what happens when we police the world. There are never any easy options when someone tries to push your hand.

Good discussion in this thread regarding geopolitics and the ramifications of U.S. involvement.

It's too bad they have to be interrupted by the excruciatingly stupid thoughts of CPGuy, who seems to be under the impression that this will be settled in a steel cage match between Obama and Putin. Grow up.

Obama just needs to whack him with a 2" x 4", like Hacksaw Jim Duggan. He would never do that though, since he is such a pussy.

Well in other instances he has never seemed to be hesitant to ignore treaties or promises we have made to other countries. In fact he seems to go out of his way to piss off our traditional allies. So please stop with the kissing of his ass

Canada makes the first move ... eh ..... ?

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/canada-pulls-ambassador-moscow-over-ukraine

Canada pulls ambassador from Moscow over Ukraine

OTTAWA (AP) — Canada says it is pulling its ambassador from Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine.

A statement issued by Prime Minister Stephen Harper after an emergency Cabinet meeting says Canada also is pulling out of the Group of Eight process being chaired by Russia for an international economic summit in June.

Harper strongly condemns Russia's military intervention in Ukraine and urges President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops.

International pressure is growing on Russia after its troops took over the strategic Crimea region Saturday. Russia's parliament granted Putin authority to use the military to protect Russian interests in Ukraine, where a new government has been named after demonstrations pushed President Viktor Yanukovych from office.

President Barack Obama, U.N. Security Council members and others are asking Russia to de-escalate tensions.

Just a note .... if I'm not mistaken, another layer to this mess is that - and this is a generalization of course - but the folks we would be "protecting" so to speak, there's no small percentage of them that would not be inappropriately described as neo-nazis ... irony aside (if one keeps with the Sudetenland analogy), it does make it a little trickier to 'defend' these folks .... now it's not hard to do so because it's under the banner of Russia threatening a sovereign nation, but still ... we're not saving a population made up of 100% little old women in babushkas making over-vinegared vegetables by candlelight.

I don't know if it's, like, 2%, 5%, 85% ... I do not get the impression, however, that it's an insignificant portion of the population in question.

People suck the world over ... Jesus Christ, Jim Parsons is headlining SNL ... maybe it's not so bad over in Ukraine ......

The Russian stuff was in Strategy and Tactics. The east Europe was Modern War.
I have stated before I play with miniatures(toy soldier) in gaming simulations. There are some easy places to keep abreast of the military stuff going on a good starting place is here
http://www.strategypage.com/

My are of interest is a lot older:ACW,Rome and such but I read a lot of Modern stuff lately. I just got a game set in the Western Pac. China vs most of her neighbors.

Nas,just pointing out you are taking the Pres side and in the past he has turned on people we have closer ties with when it suited him.

This is the reason why you need to sit this one out Chas. You're clearly having problems understanding what's being posted. Step away from the computer for a couple of mins and then come back and read the thread again. It may help.

What is there to misunderstand? I do not think we should even 1% get involved in a situation we have no need or remote capability. All we can do is talk tough. We can not help the Ukrainians in a meaningful way. You are as usual backing the Pres.

Not that he needs my defense, but Nas is as hard on the president as anyone here when it's warranted. Stop with the simplicity Chas.

Okay. You're right. All I've done is defend the president in this thread just like I always do. I probably should have spent more time posting about what is the right thing to do for Ukraine. I promise to improve in the future.
