The time of day doesn't matter. My default thinking would be that my 16 yr-old daughter and her teenage acquaintance are doing what most 16 year olds do with the opposite sex.

Just like I did when I was 16. And my friends. I did the whole sneaking out/sneaking in thing in the middle of the night. It was stupid, but I never stole anything. Never trashed a house. Never crossed my mind I could die for doing it.

The "reaching for something" is key here. If that wasn't done, I don’t believe he was "protecting his daughter". It's not like they kept fucking when the dad was in the room. They had to have separated and tried to get themselves together. At that point, you're not protecting your daughter. You have time to ask questions and determine what's going on... unless he actually did reach for something, which I doubt. He might have been pulling his pants up.
