I'm going to Kuala Lumpur next month via Lufthansa which flies out of Frankfurt, Germany (World Champions!) and basically would fly the same flight path as a flight out of Amsterdam -- I told my wife, not in a million years would I have ever even thought of the risk of getting shot out of the sky by some militia or terrorist group, so now this is going to be a great thing for my mind to periodically fixate on over those hours....

What can you even say in these situations... at least for TWA800 it wasn't intentional (at least I don't think so) but this is just scary. I know the smart thing to do here is take a minute and breathe, and try to react rationally, but something has to be done when you start slaughtering hundreds of innocent bystanders.

What would be an appropriate response?

Finally, a good reason to invade and occupy Iraq for 10 years. We're going back in...

An accident? How does one accidently fire a surface to air missile at a civilian airliner?
An accident is picking up 2% instead of Skim.

They mistook it for a Ukraine military supply plane.

Uh huh. Don't you think you should know what the fuck you're shooting at?
I mean, I don't just shoot at rustlings in the woods. I wait until I know it's a fucking deer.
And it had a goddamn civvie transponder. Legit military would not do this on accident.
This was no accident. It was intentional or horrifyingly gross negligence. Either way, not excusable.
Can't kill 23 americans on "accident".

You can because it happened today.

They allowed separatist rebels to be in control of their military hardware. I'm not sure they qualify as legit military. I do find it strange that Obama was on the phone with Putin and got the news from Vlad directly.

Chas, I'm pretty sure Presidential Agendas are set weeks or months in advance.
I can't really blame him for being somewhere other than the situation room during this.
Let's be real about it.

If you give your child a gun, and don't train him extensively on how to use it and he kills some people with it, that's not an accident.

All right. So a foreign military backed entity or a foreign country just murdered 23 Americans.
What should be the repercussions? More sanctions? They've been quite ineffective at deterring Russian escalation of this situation so far.

23 Americans die in a plane crash, and we must act immediately.

23 kids get blown away in school, and we can't even talk about it.

Putin wants Crimea and is supporting the resistance in Ukraine. They fucked up. Trained military know how to identify enemy vehicles and aircraft. Not usually with these "combatants" can you assume the same. Responsibility on Putin's Russia but nothing will come of it. Nothing to see here move along.

Well, only one dope is blaming the President, and I don't think I've (or really anyone I know) refuses to discuss the domestic violence issues.

This sounds like something the US could of easily done. Give a bunch of weapons to a group who ends up harming the wrong people.

Perhaps this is retribution for the US giving a bunch of stingers to the mujahadeen in the 80's that killed a bunch or Ruskie Heli crews?
That kind of thing?

And in any case, those responsible for those crimes domestically are held accountable one way or another.
I'm not really seeing the correlation.

Russia has made it quite clear that they have less respect for the POTUS than Scorehead does.

I don't really see where there is much at his disposal to deter the Russians at this point.

I doubt it. It is highly unlikely they knew what nationality the people on the plane were.

We need a stronger response. You can't just be shooting down civie planes with Americans on board and have nothing happen.

Right. I agree. But the point remains, we've done plenty of arming goofy bastards who killed a bunch of people with our toys too.

Well, it's not our plane.

It would be really tough to make the case that they were targeting Americans.

We did the same thing once.

He would find little backing at home for any type of military strike.

See I don't care that they didn't know Americans were on that plane.
Americans were on that plane. Civilians.
It cannot be unanswered. This is a pivotal point in this conflict... America cannot appear to be impotent on this.
