want to balance the budget or at leats be able to meet the financial obligations of the next 10 years?

Well, someone had not get something they have been getting or they need to increase taxes via property tax increases or more business? Seeing that Illinois is losing residents and businesses are leaving, that one is probably not on the table. Rahm has already sqaueezed the commercial developers to the last penny and Rauner needs more.

People are always willing to elect the guy who says he is going to "fix the problem" but they never actually like the FIX.

Well in reality Chicago will reap what they've sown. In other words of a great man the chickens are coming home to roost. There is no one to blame whether Daleys or others like Madigan when they keep electing them. The Chicago way is I will get mine and then who cares. Maybe if they didn't eliminate the need for republicans in mayoral races they could blame them.

So Chicago is Gawker and the rest of Illinois is Hogan/Thiel?

As I have been out of Illinois for 10 plus years I have a question that either will bring enlightened discussion or just same old crap. Whether it is unions or rich folks or mayors or aldermen or any other reason at all... Why not just vote them out? Why not demand better? Some of you guys are so strong with national takes and accept Illinois and Chicago is lame.

And this from the guy who donated a quarter of a million dollars to get his Winnetka daughter into a CPS magnet high school. Fleecing CPS with his charter schools for the Daleys wasn't enough I guess.

Did I mention that her scores & transcripts were sorely lacking?

Just because Daley was a (D) succubus doesn't justify Rauner from the other side. Madigan & the DuPage gang have been giving it to us as well...long fucking enough.

But it's almost fitting to watch the little dancer have this happen on his "spectacular" watch.

It's past your bed time old man. You need some rest.

Get a good night sleep and if you still feel it's our fault in DuPage that you all have elected the same assholes for a century, then so be it I guess.

Great point.

I think race plays a role. Precinct captain in my neighborhood said to me in the mid-90s, "Vote for Daley or this neighborhood will turn black." So many whites voted for the white guy (Daley) who did some great things for the city but, in the end, proved to be monstrously short-sighted and appears to have been crooked. They've got people divided and scared and we have no real options.

The same precinct captain cussed me out because I had a sign on my lawn for the non-hand-picked alderman in the 19th Ward. (The candidate whose sign was on my lawn was the uncle of one of my students. I knew he had no chance of winning, but she asked if she could put a sign on my lawn, and I said yes. He actually had some good ideas.) The precinct captain approached me at a local grocery store and said, "What the hell is with that sign on your lawn? You want Beverly to be a ghetto?" I ended up voting for the hand-picked candidate anyway, and while the precinct captain won't talk to me, I did learn that this jag has three pensions (two city, one county).

Met a candidate who ran for mayor last year. Came to our block. Sounded like a great guy. Had solid plans for building coalitions in ways that would benefit more people than those in Lincoln Park. He wasn't doing well (projected to win 10%), and at the last minute, dropped out and supported Rahm. Rahm then (allegedly?) paid his campaign debt. So was this all bullshit? Just makes you sick.

We have a dearth of real candidates.

What part of succubus talk involving the star families of Daley, Madigan & the DuPage heathens didn't you get? (Btw, I'm all for a mammoth toll booth right at Mannheim to match the one off of Highland on I-88. Unless you have a city sticker. )

And who in the hell are YOU calling old?!?

Well we can always "unite" behind another clueless, self serving North Shore/New Trier/Wilmette dancer type like the one we have, right Big?!? :D :P

I usually take Metra into the city. :P Though I did drive in yesterday and had to ransom a grandchild to pay for parking.

I still haven't gotten the estimate though for the new shock and struts I'll need because I drove over city streets.

pothole special used to run about $1100 -- to get the entire one side of the front-end suspension etc redone. $1300 out the door with city taxes and disposal fees.

Ogden Automotive 430 N Ogden @ Grand is a good place to go. Hella expensive but at least the guy is honest about ripping you off.

Given demographic trends, Rahm's possibly the last non-hispanic mayor of Chicago for who knows how long.

We moved out of Il last year to Georgia, the biggest surprise to me was finding out that Illinois actually has a low state income tax. My state tax doubled coming down in GA. Considering all of the the problems of the state, that has to rank near the biggest. To make up for that low tax, they nickel and dime everywhere else making the burden feel even greater. The house we bought in ga is 1/3 more expensive compared to Kane, yet my property tax went from being 10k to about 4K.

When I lived in il I was also surprised how low the property tax was inside of Chicago. A buddy had a unit valued about the same as me a decade back when some freeze in the city was lifted. He was complaining that his taxes were going to go up over a thousand. His taxes were still going to be almost a thousand less than Kane county.

the tax thing is more a City of Chicago / Cook County thing than an Illinois thing.

Sales taxes in the city are well over 10%; smokes $14 a pack; bottled water taxes; entertainment fees; parking tickets (really just insanely regressive taxes); taxes on spotify/netflix/streaming services; bloated cell phone taxes; etc etc.

Property taxes were considerably higher in Oak Park when I first moved to Chicago and didn't know where to live than when we moved into the city. City property taxes working their way up, up, up.

Surprised they don't tax each breath you take inside the city limits these days:

http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/de ... _list.html

those are just for the City. Layer on Cook County taxes and then the State Taxes on top of both of those.

I was referring to income tax, not sales tax. Also given a choice of high income tax and taxed everywhere else, I'd much rather have the income tax. At least then I'm only annoyed when doing my taxes. Being hit everywhere is annoys the fuck out of me.
