up here at the farm for the holiday. i don't get this god's country nature bullshit. place is overrun with varmints. an entire family of woodchucks has taken up residence in the barn. tried setting "humane" traps and they wouldn't touch em. tried snappy bear trap type device. caught the fuckers using it as a nautilus machine. tried shooting them, and just winged what i assume must be the mother. now i have a pissed off brood of ripped woodchucks out for revenge.
anyhow, while taking a break from warring with the woodchucks, i notice what looks like one of the barn cats slowly emerge from a field of wheat, or maybe barley, fuck if i can tell the difference. it inch worms its way toward the machine sheds / house. thing is moving slow. stopping and starting and lurching left and right, like it's drunk. put on my glasses to get a better look and it's a fucking raccoon. a raccoon out and about a full hour before sundown. thought they were nocturnal?
thing looks sickly and continues its slow progression toward the sheds/house. i immediately inform the dog that we have another critter to deal with and run off to obtain proper weaponry for the expected skirmish with what appears to be a rabid raccoon.
by the time i make it outside to deal with the raccoon, fucker ninja'd out of there. nowhere to be seen. dog wouldn't even alert on any scent.
do dogs not track rabid animals?
dog has been money sniffing out woodchucks and other annoying critters but it barely registered the slightest interest in helping track the rabid raccoon. I took the dog over to where the raccoon had been hobbling, to try to get it to pick up the raccoon's scent, no dice. dog just wanted to get in the car and go for a ride. maybe because i had it on leash, didn't want the dog to get bitten by the raccoon.
hope that fucking raccoon isn't upstairs. i don't go up there much. maybe it turned tail and ran back to the grain field. but i didn't think it could move that fast. only place it could've gotten to to hide would be in the house, at the pace it was moving.
